Spare Tire or No

I'm thinking about removing my spare. I never had one on my CJs and I carry a plug kit and a big can of Fix a Flat in my winch bag. Yes, I know Fix a Flat is frowned upon. I would like to shed some Jeep weight and I've seen some with and some without. Then I would have a third brake light issue. What do you folks have going on? I hate to jinx myself.

I like that. I'll give it a try. I'll probably shred a tire the day after I remove it. Did you cut the wiring harness and tuck it into a bolt hole?
You take off the little triangle piece and just pull the wires out. (it's made to do that) I was hesitant at first but it's designed like that and then just pulled it through the tailgate

Mine is just there for asthetics. It is a 31" tire and I run 33's. I guess when my kid ships out to boot camp on the 19th, I will get my Jeep back and start taking everything off the back. Just looked dumb with the spare mount and brake light without the spare. I'll be going to a drop down gate and a swing away carrier eventually.

Just another idea if you decide to go through with removing the spare permanently. You'll get tired of that license plate sticking out eventually and want to re-engineer something. :)

Man, you got a weird license plate. Ha ha j/k. I never understood why it is ok for hundreds of people to see your license throughout the day, but heaven forbid someone see it on a forum. I guess there is reasoning behind it.

A lot of sports/sporty cars don't come with a spare...my boss' wife has a Chrysler Crossfire that's a few years old and all it came with was a spare tire jack and lug wrench. So nice of them to help you take your tire off...but ain't gonna do much good without a tire to replace it with. lol

I personally like the look of Jeeps without a spare...but I also don't like to be stranded so I keep my spare on mine. Jerry Bransford I believe made a good point a while back in a discussion about running without spares. If you are serious into off-roading, a lot of clubs won't let you run with them unless you carry a spare. They don't want to be stuck towing you out/lending you their spares if you blow a tire out. On the street, just make sure you have AAA or roadside assistance with your insurance...lol

I also run 33s with a 31" spare. Still haven't been able to get that freakish anti theft lug nut off. I can't get it with my janky vice grips and I still haven't bought a large enough 12 point socket to bang onto it. Therefore my undersized spare tire has been useless in more ways than one. Jeeze, how do I get through the day.

I'm not a big fan of unnecessarily relying on others. Running with a spare allows me to relax that much more because that is something else I don't have to worry about. I went to 33s and had to run a non stock carrier, since I didn't want to put necessary stress on the tailgate. I decided to give myself something to do/try with the 3rd brake light. I was thinking about relocating it to the center of the spare, as other's have done. I also toyed around with other ideas also, but decided to go with this.

It works on me but I'm sure a dirtbag theif could get it off in seconds. Hmmm, I'm not sure if it's an OEM nut or aftermarket. I bought a set at Auto Bone for the key but it didn't quite fit. I wish I had better vice grip skills then I would have that MFr off by now.
