spare tire questions

I recently bought new tires for my jeep after the tires that were on it became too dangerous to continue using. I went from the stock size to 31x10.5s and the stock tire on the back is too small and really isnt worth carrying until i get the money to be able to carry a new spare, with the new size tire on it. Is there any way i can take off the spare and the carrier and keep the middle brake light? I was also wondering what the new tire pressure should be because my manual doesnt have my tire size.

Yes, you can remove the spare. I wouldn't bother removing the carrier as a stock one only weighs a few pounds.

What size were your original tires? If it's close, I'd keep the spare until you can afford a new one as if it's only off by an inch or so, it won't matter (UNLESS you run with lockers and use them with the spare on, DON'T DO THAT, as it will destroy your locker).

I always put 35 PSI in my spare. Two reasons. First, it will leak a small amount of air over time and that way I shouldn't have a flat spare when I need it. Second, I can always let air out when I mount it if I need to (I run 26 lbs in my 35" tires). No weight on the tire and inflated to it's advertised maximum air pressure is what to aim at, just remember to let some air out if you need to.

I totally agree with liveout. It would definitely be handy in a pinch, leave it hung until you buy another tire.

Ok, you went from 28.28 dia to 30.97" which is about 8.7% bigger.

Not optimal by any means and I wouldn't hang that spare and cook down the highway at 70 for a week until you can replace a tire BUT to get you back to civilization, I'd keep it and use it for a spare.

Try craigslist, ebay or your local tire shop and see if you can find a used 31" tire for cheap. It doesn't need to be excellent, just enough to get you out of the woods.

Well, the stock carrier (that' what you have, right?) should hold a 31" tire, but it depends on the width of the tire and offset of the wheel.

Heck, try one. Jack it up and try to hang one.

Or, buy a closer to 31" tire that WILL fit on the carrier and do that.
