speakers/headunit

I went through quite a few pages on the search forum and cant quite find everything I'm looking for. I have a set of infinity speakers for my dash, but where can I find the Mounting plates? aloso, are the 05 soundbar speakers the same as the rest? They are 5.5" right? Another thing, Is there any sound benifit with an aftermarket headunit over the stock radio? I think thats it for now for my questions lol. I really appriciate everyone on here that answers them... I know I ask a ton

My 97 has 5.25 speakers in the sound bar. I just put Polk audio 6.5 in there place. Fit right in the stock hole. But I drilled new holes. Just easier. Got adapters to connect the stock harness to the speakers. $12 for a set. No cutting!!!! Better quality sound and more features in the aftermarket radio. Your choice. Mounting plates you can find on ebay for the front speakers. I just cut mine out of sheet steel and drilled them.

Plowboy summed it up. The other benefit to an aftermarket head unit is adding amps. Make sure if you spend money on a head unit it has at least two sets of RCA outs (preamp) to add on later. It makes a huge difference. Amps are
Not just for bass- they can make any music much more clear.

If you buy it from Crutchfield, they have complete vehicle-specific installation instructions. They also have the wiring harness for your vehicle. I've purchased several stereos from them over the years and installed them myself. However, I like the stock stereo that came with my Wrangler and the fact that thieves are less likely to steal it.

agreed with everyone on the head unit issue. You can find a head unit with the RCA outputs on the back for just a few dollars more than one without them, so definitely spring for that.

As for the mounting plates, I found mine on ebay. They were $15 shipped, brand new, and fit perfectly.

You will notice a difference in sound just by putting the speakers in, but the real magic will happen with a new head unit. Make sure you're looking at RMS output wattage and not being swayed by the "peak output power" of the unit.

Good luck with your purchase. There are some great write-ups on how to install speakers and head units here - it's a LOT easier than you might think.

Thanks for all the replies. Dunno if a lift or sound come first... I think I'll go with the bigger speakers in the sound bar too.

I agree Crutchfield has a really good database of what fits in your vehicle. And aftermarket headunit will really sound better clarity wise over factory and will be louder too. I have a pioneer headunit with Bluetooth an old Kicker ZR650 amp & an old school 15" Cerwin Vega Stroker to put in eventually.

+1 on crutchfield, I talked to a tech and told him what I was looking for and he suggested the products, I bought mu kicker amp and rear speaker from them, they are more expensive vs what you can find on the web, but because they gave me good advice I bought it from them, only my front speaker I got from amazon. Crutchfield have good service and tech, if you use them, then give them your business.

+2 on Crutchfield. I love that place. There was a thread on here where I suggested Crutchfield - which turned into an arguement on price...but to me, overall value is still with Crutchfield. All of the wiring harnessses and mounting hardware is free on head units over $100 and again - the customer service is wonderful.
