Spectre CAI Hydrolock Engine

Just FYI... if you install a Spectre intake that feeds from the cowel... and it rains for 3 days... your engine may hydrolock. I wish I could say this wasnt from experience.

I've had there intake on for 2 years now but took some precautions. Bought one of the intake hood scoops to put over the cowl grill slots and added some gutter guard to the scoop to keep debris out. Used a rubber grommet to insure water tight seal through firewall hole. Cleared out drain hose in the cowl area and use a filter cover on the filter itself. I drove through flooded streets and had the torrential rain from hurricane sandy without any issues. Sorry to hear about your jeep and I hope you caught it before any of the rods bent. I did the additional steps above because I could see how the intake might be able to take in water. I would contact spectre and file a claim. You might not get anything out of them but at least they will know people are having serious issues with their intake. Good luck and I hope all goes well.

I plan on getting one as a way to free up engine space but still look professional. Like motowithy said though, I plan to take extra precautions. File a claim though, spectre has been good on paying repairs for many jeep owners with their CAI.

If the cowl drain is clear and functional, I don't see how this could happen.

I don't see how this would be Spector's fault???? Had OP made sure the drain tube was clear it probably wouldn't have happened.

I remember someone hydro locked theirs in a similar way because of slushy snow ice that plugged the cowl drain.

I had a cowl vent cover, seals, and a screen too. I really don't know what to say. The only thing is that I just finished an axle swap. So for the few weeks it was sitting, water must have drained in. I'm sure some set ups work. But I'm saying f*** this and getting a snorkel. It was full of water up to the throttle body and the oil was milk. There is a good chance I messed up somehow, but I won't be using spectre again. the 4X4 shop in my town said they had seen this a few times before with spectre.

Go back to a OEM intake... Plus snorkels depreciate the value of your Jeep.

Out of curiosity, how does the snorkel depreciate value? Also, if I kill an engine, flip it, blow it up I don't care. I will fix it no matter how irrational it is. I'm not planning on selling any time soon.... also it has 240k mileage, I think my value is already shot. Thanks though.

Because you're cutting a nice big hole in the side of your jeep. Also a snorkel is usually done by new guys who think its enough for deep water without doing any other supporting mods. 99% of the time it 's accompanied by a lack of research.

In my personal experience and opinion, installing a CAI onto a Wrangler is as effective at improving performance as putting lipstick on a pig makes it pretty.

I can be hard headed and I had to see for myself if a CAI would help. I'm starting to agree with you. I don't think it does much. I would do a snorkel for the sake of moving my intake away from the ground and splashes. I won't try to make my jeep a submarine. I don't want to hydrolock an engine ever ever ever again.

Did you notice the water in the motor before you tried to start it? The motor might be ok, drain it add fresh oil with new filter run it for a bit then change oil & filter again.

I have an '02 sport with the spectre CAI, I would agree that it doesn't noticeably improve performance. However, it gives me peace of mind knowing that my intake is out of the engine compartment for those oh sh*t moments when the water crossing or mud hole is deeper than I think it is. Also, I have no idea if this is true or not, but I would think that sucking the cooler outside air (as opposed to the hot air in the engine compartment) would help a little bit in keeping the engine running cooler? That's just my speculation though

Ya, I did drain the oil ( water came out for 5 seconds) changed oil & air filter and plugs. Its running now. I still keep scaring myself into thinking I hear a connecting rod scraping the cylinder wall or something. But if something was wrong then I think it would be thinking more rough. It's now off for a alignment and new cooper set 285/70R17 hopefully the new axle/ locker/ steering works well too. Ha I'm sure the tire shop will call me and say I put the axle in backwards or something

One advantage of the Spectre design is as you mentioned that it does raise the intake point to an area less likely to take water (though you can build a rig a lot cheaper yourself)

Cooler (outside the engine area) air's advantage is the potential for more HP, not a cooler engine. Air, like many things expands when it is hot. There are fewer Oxygen molecules per a given volume. Cold (or at least cooler) air will contain more Oxygen. The engine management system (in the case of the TJ, a speed density system) estimates how much Oxygen is available and meters the fuel. The more Oxygen = more fuel = more HP output.

I understand the logic behind it. But I still think the amount of hp gained is not that relevant. It also has a metal casing that goes right next to the engine. It must heat up a little. I don't disagree with you, but I still have second thoughts on spectre.

For me it was more about clearing the space for my future double battery and onboard air system. Wasn't expecting any horsepower gains.
