Speed up hill

I have a 2002 2.5 5 speed. When I start uphills I loose speed very fast and have to down shift from 5th, to 4th, and most of the time to 3rd to get uphills and end up running 30 to 35 mph. Think the cats may need to be replaced but thought I would ask around 1st. Any Ideas.

What size tires? What gearing?

For the most part...what you are saying sounds like normal behavior to me. 5th gear is overdrive, so it is used mainly for cruising, not for pulling grades. Having to downshift from 4th wouldnt be uncommon either depending on the grade and considering the fact that you only have a 2.5L.

it's a 2.5L in a ~3500 lb vehicle with the aerodynamics of a barn. don't expect much.

now, you still need to make sure all the maintenance is up to date...including that the cat isn't clogged. there's plenty of easy ways to check for that...see youtube...

My 97 has a 2.5L, 5-speed, 4.10 gears with 33" tires and I can cruise at 70 MPH as long as I don't hit hills. When I hit hills on the highway I downshift to 4th as my speed starts to drop but it never drops below 55 MPH. You should be able to maintain 55 MPH with your 31" tires.
