got pulled over tonight, cop said he clocked me at 36 in a 25, well he wrote the ticket for 35 and told me that if i was doin under 35 he wouldnt have even pulled me over because he said he is very lenient (spl). well my tires are 235/75s so just a little bigger than stock and im puttin 31s on on monday so i told him that i had bigger tires which threw my speedo off. he was like "well i had the same thing happen with my truck, just get it fixed and bring in a receipt and we'll drop the charges".. so im going to get it calibrated since i have to for my new tires anyways..anyone know how much a speedo calibration costs at most shops??

fight the ticket always.worst that can happen is you pay the ticket.
I don't know what they have going on over in Virginia but it sounds like what Oregon has. It's called "fix a ticket" and it does work. I got a ticket for no mudflaps on my Jeep after I lifted it. I took in the receipt and the Jeep to the court house and a cop came out to see the mudflaps and the ticket was dropped. Simple as that.

04rubi-might do that but wasnt gonna say that on here

and yea they'll drop it, i know a lot of people that have done it, my gf had to do it when her speedo completely quit workin

not gonna fight it, gonna get it dropped lol fighting means i could pay the ticket which means my insurance goes up which would suck seeing as how it went down 25 dollars last month due to my good driving record

damn :( yea imma try that route, and i did i have a 2 door car before my jeep that i put a lot of money in, got 2 tickets and was pulled over alllllllll the time in it (loud exhaust, tint, etc,) and this is the first time being pulled over in the jeep, i never spend since i got it, kinda hard too with a 4cyl:punk:

I doubt those tires are gonna make that big of a difference. My 33's don't. My speedo is pretty close to what my wife's stock Sport Trac says. Along with every radar sign I pass. I say just quit speeding if you want to avoid a ticket. In Georgia, as well as a lot of other states, it won't go on your record unless its 15 over or more. Virginia is a communist state though. Can't even have a radar detector. Whats up with that?

i now to quit speeding guys, i posted this soley to find out how much a recalibration costs on average, thats the only question i asked, and neverfastenough1 not worried about my record , worried bout insurance which would go up, also not worried bout the speedo being off but its gonna get me outta the ticket soooo, and i also agree with virginia being a communist state (comonwealth actually) we have so many stupid rules and laws

If it doesn't go on your record, your insurance shouldn't go up. The don't speed came off wrong, and I am not one to talk because I didn't trade my Stang in on the Jeep just so I would have something to get from point A to point B a little faster than I should. I have plenty of 20+ over tickets unfortunately, and its really not good on a CDL.

Neil F- the only reason i want to recalibrate it is to get out of the speeding ticket lol and i need written proof from a shop in order to get out of the ticket, fixing it myself would be completely the opposite
Neverfastenough1- no worries lol

Yupp Virginia is the same, had a friend got a ticket for not having baffles in his muffler on his civic, he went and bought some, put them in, and drove to the court house and a cop went out and checked to make sure the baffles were in and the ticket was dropped lol

Every state I've lived in, if a cop wrote you a speeding ticket, there is no recourse other than fighting it in court. That is a "moving violation." If he wrote you an equipment ticket (speedo, lights, mudflaps, etc) then you fix it and take in proof (receipt or visual inspection) and they will invalidate the ticket.

On a side note, years ago (I was around 19) I fought a speeding ticket based on the same premise (oversized wheels/tires on my 442.) I went to court, had a signed affidavit from a certified mechanic stating that my speedometer was affected by the oversized tires...judge sat there and listened to the cop's statements, then took my statements, read the affidavit... and promptly sided with the state. Not sympathetic to a 19yo kid with a 442, I guess. Or more likely, a judge figures if you are smart enough to know that your speedo is affected by your tire size, then you're smart enough to compensate for it.

It is a violation of the Terms of Service to promote criminal activity such as asking a repair shop to just print out a receipt to get out of a ticket.

I don't want to see any more talk about it. You have been warned.

coyote- yes sir, sorry about that, a lot of confusion in this thread, my point was that i want to go to shop and have it calibrated then have them write something down that i can show the court proving they did it which will drop the ticket

You're fine. We just can't have illegal acts or activities posted on the board.

Your question is fine and when/if you get the service to recal your speedo the shop will give you a receipt for services preformed. All you need to show the judge. Although it doesn't matter in some states or to some judges. I personally know it will not fly in Missouri. :zap:

Find out how much it will cost to get your speedo calibrated. Then call the little number of the citation to find out how much the ticket will cost. Base your decision off that. It might be worth it to just pay the ticket.

I had a guy re-calibrate my VR6 after I got my last reckless (96/60) and it was some really sketch guy that had womens underwear in the passenger seat of the car he showed up in..he looked like a hobo that just walked out of the Ice Age. I was hesistant to let him drive me lowered Jetta...turned out the judge completely through it out and I ended paying the fine and actually did jail time for that little maneuver.

I now drive a Jeep...slowly.

If you have a four banger like me your guaranteed to never get a reckless ticket. Now could have gotten one the other day in my friends camero. But I wasent driving. How much jail time is a little?

I completely agree. ^^^

Before I changed my speedo gear, at 60mph it was off about 5mph. The thing to remember the inaccuracy increases as your speed rises. At zero, your going zero, at 30mph you may be going 32mph, and at 40mph you may be going 43. You get the idea.
The gear change is quick and easy. There are gear calculators floating around on the web that will help you choose the correct amount of teeth you need for the gear. I picked one up at my local Jeep dealer, or you can order one from the net.
Good luck.

The laws are addressing the speed of the vehicle, not what your speedometer reading is, not tire size, or what you might have for dinner tomorrow.

At least in Calif you don't need a speedometer at all!

The laws pertain to how fast you are going - regardless of any excuse.

I went from the original 30" tires on my 2001 Sahara to 31" tires and my speedometer still reads 1 mph higher than most of the road side radar signs. Always wondered how much higher it would be reading with the 30" tires. I knew my older GM cars usually read 2-3 MPH higher than what I would calculate from the mile markers on the highways but I thought most newer vehicles were closer than that.

a lot of people are saying that they dont think my tires will make much a different on my speedometer and that they dont think it will fly in court....when i was pulled over the officer said quote word for word "if you go get your speedo recalibrated and bring your receipt to court then your ticket will be dropped even if its only 1 mph off" the reason he said even if it was a mile an hour off is because he told me that if i was doin 35mpg he wouldnt have pulled me over because of that grace period that a previous person posted a few posts ago. so even if it is one mile an hour off then it will work...
