Speedo fix

A buddy has a 2000 TJ Sahara with an automatic. He put 31's on it and is being told he has to reflash the ECM, that they can't regear the speedo?? Is this correct???

Regards, Hamshog

97-06 TJ (non Rubicon) have a mechanical pick up. The way to adjust the speedo is to change the gear. Rubicons have an electronic pick up and the only way to custom adjust is by an add on electronic box. There is nothing to do in the computer in either case. The difference going to 31's is minimal and not worth it.

My TJ came with 215's on it, so 31's are 4 inches taller. It makes my speedo off by about 10%. That's off enough that if I were driving 65 by the speedo, I'd actually be going a little over 70mph, which is enough to get me pulled over in some places around here.
