Question Speedo help

I can't get any response on my other post so I thought I would try again. I have a 98 TJ and the Speedometer isn't working. I bought a new speed sensor, checked the voltage coming to the VSS (5.8 V). Checked the voltage at the cluster (12.9). Checked to see if the spedo gear was making contact. Everything is in check. I then removed the VSS and attached my drill to it and had my wife sit in the jeep and watch the speedometer. She said it got all the way up to 40mph and I got the odometer to roll over .2 miles on the trip. I thought maybe the VSS I bought was bad so I went and bought another. Still no worky!!!!!!! Please help me!!!!!!!

Well you know it's working from the VSS to the speedo, and if your driven gear is good, bout the only thing left would be the drive gear on the transfer case.

If memory serves me it's a plastic gear that is attached to the T case output shaft.

It's what spins the driven gear that spins the VSS, that operates the speedo.

Could be it's stripped on the shaft and slipping.

4th one down here.

Do you have an SYE? Because the stock shaft has metal gears made into the shaft to spin the the speedo gear. My SYE shaft has a plastic one though.

Also something I would look at and is a simple mistake.

The Speedo gear has three....yes three clocked positions for different size gears.

Is it clocked to the correct position for the gear?

Yes, I did check the position last night. I had it in the wrong position but even when I moved it (tried all three) it still didn't work. I check the other gear. Thanks for the responses.

I intended to mention that in my post as well, since I learned that the hard way, as you well know. Guess I forgot.

Thanks for all of the input! I took my SYE out only to find that the drive gear was missing. Now tell me this...how could you be 'driving around one day and it just stopped working'? I guess the darn thing just disappeared!
