Sport Cage Vs. Roll Cage

I'm assuming the bolt-on "sport cages," as sold by Rock Hard, offer a lot less protection than a true well-together roll cage. Am I right?

Depends on the design of the weld in cage.

Does the sport cage provide any protection, or is it just for looks?

I rolled this CJ5 in 1982 and had the windshield come in on our heads - not good. And while the factory roll bar did its job, it was bent after just 1 time over and might have collapsed had we gone over again.

No you are not right.

The Rock Hard cage does not bolt on. The Rock Hard cage is clamped to the factory cage by monstrous clamps.

Many arguments will be made about this subject and many will argue weld in is better without ever seeing the Rock Hard cage.

It's a good place to start, but the windshield bars that go from the B-pillar to the windshield are not part of the roll over protection. the windshield will still collapse in on your, even in a TJ...unless you do something about it and build a new A-pillar.

Take a look at the PolyPerformance and KOZ cages. I run an older Poison Spyder Customs cage, where I replaced the windshield bars with 1.75x.120" DOM, and make some custom rear additions....some say the A-pillar on it isn't quite a strong as a "through the dash" style, which these people prefer over dash plates.

I'm looking at a GenRight roll cage to weld inside my TJ.

UnlimitedLJ04: I would love to have a Poison Spyder Cage but I heard they don't produce anymore
