Spring time and a rattle can.

Where I live spring time has arrived early, giving me a couple of days of warm weather in a row. I decided to take the advice of many a Jeeper here on this forum and rattle can my 2001 TJ fenders. As many of you Jeepers know, the plastics on many of the Jeep products between certain years fades from black into a hideous looking corpse grey , and since I have a 2000 XJ I can safely say that yes, this is a universal annoyance.

That being said I went out and decided this was the day to do something about those funky fenders.

First things first... I didn't have a massive amount of time to do this so I decided to keep the fenders on since I had to be somewhere at sundown, so I covered the Jeep from the over spray.

First after cleaning the fenders I used painters tape to go under the edges of the fenders onto the body. Here is the second line of tape... hey man I know it's black paint on black, but I don't want to mix the two.

Then I added some newspaper to the mix.

After that was done I removed the turn signals.

Add some tape...

Check out the original color of the fenders that was blocked by the light... ugh what a difference.

I used two cans of Krylon Fusion satin since I only had a limited amount of time to do this small project. But here's a tip! To anyone who will do this I will recommend purchasing this little sprayer handle. For $3.00 this is a fantastic investment for a tool that will slip onto the top of any paint can.

Why this wasn't around years ago, I'll never know.

Using painting technique I applied flat, long, even passes of the Krylon away from the fenders adding paint gradually rather than all at once.

Here are the results for the first basic coat.

I must not have cleaned everything as well as I thought, some of the paint was having a reaction to something on the fenders that didn't come off.

No matter... keep moving ahead! So now I added the second coat.

The second coat is on the left... the piece with only one coat is on the bottom.

Well into the second can here is the third coat of paint.

This stuff is dry to the touch in about 15-20 minutes, so I was able to get three coats of paint on the fenders and steps in a reasonable timeframe.

Ok, now the cans are done and this is all I can do for the day. Time to take off the paper and get this thing back on the road.

No light...

Light.

The biggest annoyance in this whole thing was the tape job, going up and then taking it back down. Since I placed it under the edges there was a tendency for the tape to rip off leaving a portion of it under the fender effectively creating a blue line around the fenders... with some time and a pair of tweezers all of this rouge tape came of without a hitch.

It's almost a night and day difference. I am really impressed by this simple little project, it looks a thousand times better than it did. Will it stand up to time, wheeling, and the elements? Who knows... if anything happens to them you'll be the first to know.

Yeah, the end caps will be messed with soon. I wanted to do that on this day but I only had so much time before I hit the road. I'll get to it and post a few pics for you
