Sputter when gas is applied and horrible MPG

hey guys, recently i have noticed that my engine will sputter or "hesitate" when i apply gas every time im shifting into a new gear, and im also getting horrible mpg's. does anyone know what could be the cause of this? im not sure where to start other than possible an o2 sensor but im not getting any codes. thanks in advanced. i have a 04' 4 banger

My 92 4cyl was doing this... Sputtering/hesitating. Made me feel stupid cause it looked as If I were barely learning to drive stick lol
Took it to three mechanics and couldn't find anything. Replaced fuel filter and still kept acting up.
Till I went with what some guys here had suggested and replaced my TPS myself. (My engine light wasn't on btw) It's like $35 and takes 5mins.
Now it runs perfect!
Try it, won't hurt.
Also, when I checked codes, it didn't read the TPS but I replaced it anyway.

Krysta, was the fuel pump a pain to change? Mine is getting weak and its going to need swapping soon.

Whoops I'm sorry!!! I meant the fuel filter... My apologies.
Idk how hard it is, but I do know that less than a month ago I took it to the jeep dealership for 5 recalls, one of them was the fuel pump sending unit and the catalytic converter which is back ordered.
Dealer covered all 5 recalls and mine is a 92.
I'd recommend checking to see if u get lucky and have any unperformed recalls related to the fuel pump

Aaah ok. I'm lucky cause I'm within walking distance of the dealership. Hehe but ya it still is an inconvenience.

the fuel pump (and fuel filters) are on/in the tank. Not extremely hard to do, but dropping the tank is a necessity.

you can follow this video for the drop and install

Jeep Wrangler gas tank skid plate installation - YouTube

I'd try that TPS though, or doing a throttle body cleaning. Consists of a spray you find at the auto parts store and spraying it down, mainly to make sure the butterfly is moving correctly with the gas petal

Isn't the fuel filter on the outside? It's attached under the frame fwd of the rear driver wheel.... Isn't?

on a TJ is on the top of the fuel pump, and a screen filter on the bottom of the pump, on a YJ it may be inline on the frame somewhere, a lot of filters are inline somewhere but i know the TJ's is on top of the tank in the pump
