Starting Problem

I have a 2001 Jeep that until now was running fine - I had someone come 150 miles to buy it yesterday and of all days not to start it had to be yesterday!

I'm pretty sure its not the battery or the starter - some strange things happening, eg, without the key in the ignition the speed / rev counter needles were flicking up and down! When I tried to start it the dashboard lights all came on as I'd expect but nothing happened - doesn't even try to turn over. I made sure the battery was fully charged but still nothing! I made sure all the terminals are clean and tights.

About a year ago I remember a similar problem and I changed the starter switch and from what I remember that fixed the problem - I guess this could have gone faulty again!! Any other ideas as this guy wants to come back and buy it but obviously needs it fixing and a reason for the problem?? I'm going to get a replacement switch today and try that but other thoughts will be welcome before I go waste my money...

I also thought it could be the clutch switch so I read up on that problem and tried starting the Jeep with the 4WD in 4 LO as per comments on this forum - this didnt make any difference so I hopefully eliminated the clutch switch.

Thanks,

be sure there isn't any water leaking in behind the dash or in the column. If it was fine when you parked it, that could very well be the cause.

I am having a similar problem. Although it happens rarely, I turn the key and go to start, the gauges do a little jump and then all the dash lights go out and it won't start, just click. If I cycle thr key a few times it starts but yeah, sounds exactly like your problem.
