Location: Los Angeles half the time, Florida the other half.
Steel Wheels. Need 'em.
I'm not nuts about alloy wheels. I'm clear as to why I prefer steel, but I'm not sure about fit and availability.
What I want is very specific. Steel, as stock as possible, but not the orig Jeep Wrangler factory offerings. Closest thing to what I want is basically what you'd find on an average light truck spare tire. Pure practicality. Proper dimensions to handle 31x10.5x15 tires, but with zero jazziness or style. Pure utility.
I have Canyons on currently, and will gladly trade them for the right, heavier, yep, less attractive, yep, chrome/moly steel wheels. The Canyons are in great condition.
I know alum alloy is awesome. Light. Decreases rolling resistance. Call me crazy. I like steel.
The attached pics are close to what I'm looking for. These are some random pics I found which look like what I want, but of course, they have to fit the stock TJ hubs, calipers, etc. I think it's possible, haven't researched this fully yet, that some Dodge or Ford light truck wheels from various past years may fit.
The first pic is of a '67 Corvette rally wheel. That's the closest to what I'm looking for that I've seen so far.
I ran aluminum, then switched to steel thinking it looked "tougher" and was less expensive. That lasted two years and after way too much fighting with bent and dented steel wheels from my desert wheeling, I gave up and went back to aluminum. I spent way too much time on the trail with a small sledgehammer straightening the dents out of my steel wheels so they could hold air. Steel is fine for gentler trails but if you wheel much out in the desert where there are rocks, since you live in LA part of the year, I can't recommend you switch to steel.
There is literally no one left in my rock crawling group left running steel wheels any more, they simply could not hold up. We all run aluminum wheels now. I wish I could post a pic here at work I have at home of one of the steel wheels after a day of wheeling on the rocks.
