Steering/Handling Between '02 and '06

I've recently test driven a pair of 2006 Wrangler "X" models and an '02 Sport. I was struck by how different the two '06s felt compared to the '02, specifically steering weight and ride firmness. Having also owned a 2001 that I sold a few years ago, it seemed as though the 'newer' Jeeps had a lot more looseness in the steering and a much floatier rides.

Is this a coincidence, or were differences made in the newer TJs? Thanks in advance. Sorry if this has been addressed previously.
