Steering wheel lock?

I have a 2003 Sport with a clunking noise behind the dash/steering column. It is intermittent, and I have already read all the threads about steering column clunk. I checked my steering shaft, and there seems to be no lateral movement. I was talking to a friend's husband and he suggested it might be the steering wheel lock pin. I hadn't noticed before, but I do not have a functional steering wheel lock when I shut off the ignition and turn the wheel.

Did all manual TJ's come with a steering wheel lock? Is it possible that a steering lock pin could make that much of a clunking/rattle when hitting bumps?

I need to narrow this down somewhat before I go pay a mechanic to start digging, as I am not very mechanical.

Sometimes the steering wheel needs to turn 1/4 to 1/2 turn before it will lock. Well 1/2 may be pushing it a bit.

It is extremely unlikely that the pin could bounce up and make that kind of racket. When you turn your key in the cylinder, there is a gear that pushes that pin down, even if it broke it wouldn't clunk. Take the shroud off the column and look around, only a few screws, start small and simple.

I've also got an 03 Sport. Automatic though. Steering doesn't lock on mine either. Discovered that this past week. Hmm.
Daily driver
4.0 Automatic
Banks intake and cat-back exhaust
ARB lockers front and rear
High Rock front bumper (winch to come)
33" BFGs wrapped on unidentified Taiwanese brand rims.

My 2000 TJ Sport steering wheel doesn't (didn't) lock either and today a few high school kids moved (rolled without a key) the jeep from one parking place to another as a practical joke.

After a little digging, I found that the key my son was using was defective and allowed him to remove the key without moving it all the way to the normal remove position. He wasn't using the little button you have to push to get the key to go all the way to the remove position. Now that the ignition is in the normal key removal position, the steering wheel locks just fine by moving it about a 1/6 turn after removing the key. And he's using the good key now.
