Stereo installation

How hard is it to replace the stereo/speakers in a 97 tj? I'm 40 and it's probably been 25 years since I have messed with a stereo. lol
But mine has the stock stereo, which I could live with, but it is just too low on the volume. With the top off, you can't even hear it. Didn't know if this is a tough job or do i need to find a 16 year old kid to put it in for me

Its gravy, all you need is the correct dash kit/harness, and speaker adapters

Yeppers, it's easy, hubby did the sound bar and I did most of the dash speakers on ours a week ago... I couldn't cut through the metal piece in the dash, and had to get some testosterone to assist... Wouldn't have had to do that, but I wanted to put 5.25's in there... Put 6.5's in the sound bar and along with the new head unit it sounds a million times better....

get a set from crutchfield they will usually send the wire adapters and install bracket. try to find a speaker with a high sensitivity rating, anything over 90dB will be good, and as for the rms power find something in the 15-25rms watts

I went with Quadratech, Sony HU and got the installation kit and the plug and play wiring harness with it. It took about an hour to remove and replace the HU. And maybe 45 minutes to remove and replace the speakers. Get some good speakers however, like Alpines etc. They are worth the extra $$$ I got an off brand of speakers from the local stereo store here for under $125 but they are awesome, loud, and don't distort.

You don't even have to cut the metal support structure in the front speaker area, to install 5.25 speakers. just turn the speakers outward slide 'em in, secure with metal straps or beefy zip ties. Do you think it won't sound right that way? Ever heard of Bose wave radio? or Reflect speakers? sounds awesome! and doesn't reduce the integrity of the support structure in the dash area of your jeep. I'm at work and away from my jeep for a month or so, but will post or send pics when I get back if anyone wants. I also put 6.5 speakers in the sound bar. Inferno Girl is right, it sounds sooo much better!

90% of 6.5" will fit in the soundbar, you will need a bracket to fit the 5's in the front.

you only need the bracket if the speakers are mounted facing forward. didn't need them the way I installed mine. and I used Sony explod 3 way, 6.5, shallow mounted speakers, in the sound bar. They are actually are designed to fit in a 5.25" speaker hole.
