Stereo installed.....mostly

Just got done from a late night of installing my new stereo. jl audio 5.25 in front, jlaudio 6.5 in roll bar, and a kenwood xr-4s to push all of it. I kept the stock head unit because aside from the amp I am making everything look stock.....friggin thieves.

This setup sounds wicked good.

In a bit I will also be replacing the stock woofer with a jlaudio 6w3. It should fit with some minor mods. I will bridge the four channel kenwood when that time comes. Running all four front speakers off one channel and the sub off the other. So I will have no fade front to back....but eh. Small price to pay to be able to hide everything and eat up minimal space.

Just wanted to say its always nice to mod the jeep. Especially when it comes out sounding/looking so good.

i would strongly suggest getting a new headunit the factory unit is not going to really bring those speakers to life. yes they are loud but if you want to be able to put the top down and take the doors off and be able to hear everything with no distortion a new unit will make that happen.

Overall, you're right - you're not going to get the ease and control that a aftermarket HU would give you. But you can get away with it with a decent RCA line out converter made by Scosche and tweak the EQ from there for your preferred settings. It's NICE to be able to tweak my subs directly and solely from my HU, but addressing it via BASS on the factory is do-able.

But I have to say, I have my aftermarket HU w/ no doors and no roof 24/7, and have had it in Camden, Philly, and around where I live and haven't had any problems. I just remove the faceplate and take it with me (aka I throw it under my seat ). Also, I have my amp underneath my seat spraypainted with this nasty textured heat dissipating sky blue. It's an Alpine but no one is going to want to unbolt it in this condition.

yeah i went with a pioneer HU with a 7 band EQ, and controls for the sub rca outputs with a FQ cutoff and sends 4 volts of power through the rca's, along with two more rca's for the rear and two for the front, 2 usb inputs, one aux input. its rms output is 65watt x4 at 4 ohms.

for theft protection i lock the faceplate in the glove box. and i have the bestop extendatrunk that helps hide my amps, subs and enclosure.

i installed a set of infinity kappa perfect components in the front and rear, infinity amp for the speakers, MB Quart DSC 1500.1d amp, and a 12" dual 4ohm voice coil incriminator audio lethal injection with the box tuned to 35Hz pushing 900watt rms, 0/1 gauge wire all around, 0/1 gauge battery power wire to the alt and both battery ground wires. 10 guage speaker wire for the components.

I had this exact concern until. I figure if the distortion gets too bad I can always swap the head unit. This is sort of a trial run....testing the theory.

But I just finished everything last night and it is impressive. I honestly wasn't expecting the quality achieved. I spent a little more than I wanted on the RCA converter but its helping to clean up the sound going to the amp. The converter is powered has some gain dials on it, so I don't need to stress the head unit and degrade the sound quality to crank it. It took a while to get it all dialed in but it sounds crystal.

Oh and that jl audio 6" w3 is a significant force in the stock sub location. I can even here it at 75mph with the top down. I didn't think it would hit this hard i just wanted some bass fill. It required some savvy mods to the stock box but it fits. I still need to work out some rattles but other than that it the jams.

Thanks for your advice. I may eventually change the head unit when i get tired of the wimpy EQ. But for now I am stoked this install works so well.

Kenwood makes a xr-5s now. 5 channel version of your amp, same size.

I have a Pyle marine stereo on order...in the mail...I am going the other route. New receiver first, then see what the speakers will do. I had to really do some searching to find a 1.5 DIN to fit that damn space and look stock for thievery reasons too! Found a nice simple one that has a CD player with anti-shock/skip and also will take an IPOD. My current stock system eats CDs for breakfast after one playing. ARGH.
