Overall, you're right - you're not going to get the ease and control that a aftermarket HU would give you. But you can get away with it with a decent RCA line out converter made by Scosche and tweak the EQ from there for your preferred settings. It's NICE to be able to tweak my subs directly and solely from my HU, but addressing it via BASS on the factory is do-able.
But I have to say, I have my aftermarket HU w/ no doors and no roof 24/7, and have had it in Camden, Philly, and around where I live and haven't had any problems. I just remove the faceplate and take it with me (aka I throw it under my seat
). Also, I have my amp underneath my seat spraypainted with this nasty textured heat dissipating sky blue. It's an Alpine but no one is going to want to unbolt it in this condition.
