I know I have been needy lately but what are friends for?
My engine has been sputtering for a while now, specifically when I start from a stop on a hill, when I'm on the highway and I go up a hill I downshift and step on it and the engine sputters like crazy and it doesn't want to keep going. I'm fairly certain it's a spark issue, it just feels like it's misfiring and it will throw a misfire code for a second then the light will go out. That's only when I step on it going up a hill on the highway though. I changed the plugs and cleaned the throttle body and it still does it. It's getting annoying, even sometimes from a flat start if I don't give it a rev before I let the clutch out and give it gas to take off it will sputter. My next step is to get new plug wires and if that doesn't do it then replace the ignition coil. any advice? am I on the right track?
Also after a 10 minute ride on the highway, when I get off and stop at the light it will idle rough while i'm sitting there.

I had the same problem in mine, it would sputter, and feel like it wa gonna die unless i really put my foot in it, it did die a few times when i left it running while i ran into my house or something. That was months ago, its never done it since and i didnt do anything to stop it so i dont know.
I can order the factory plug wires for my Jeep and I'm sure those are fine since that's what come with it, there Omix. What would be the benefit of different wires if there is any? I see
they have fire something plug wires for $85 but that seems crazy, should I just go with stock or are there something else that's recommended?
Alright I have some more info...I'm really leaning towards something in the fuel system now. Not only is it doing this on hills etc...whenever I try and punch it, even being in the power band, if I don't gradually increase the gas it will hesitate,choke, and sputter whenever I step on it. If i'm slow and smooth with the pedal it drives fine, but when I push the gas to try to speed up quick it chokes, hesitates and sputters, what gives?
When you accelerate the plugs need MORE voltage to fire. If the ignition is weak, it won't fire properly. I think you were on the right track with the ignition.
Try something - often it's an insulation breakdown - wires, cap, coil wire or coil itself. (In days past defective coils were few and far between, but now that they no longer use oil inside as an insulator they are more prone to failure.
Spray a mist of water, windex, 409 or something like it - on the coil, coil wire, cap and plug wires. If you hit a weak spot in the insulation it'll run worse (it shorts the voltsge to ground) - or at least you'll feel a tingle (no it's not a bad shock, just a tingle.) Then you'll know what to fix.

I am having the same issue as well. I have replaced plugs, wires, fule filter, O2 sensor, checked TPS and cleaned throttle body. I will pull distributer tonight but dont think I will find anything. It almost sounds like it is chocking out.
Mine is a 94 wrangler and it only has one o2 sensor (I thought), which i have changed. Like ADKJOE everything I do makes an improvement but no fix. I still need to go through the distributor tonight and my next step is to use seafoam. i am really suspecting an injector issue but that is a rather costly change out on a maybe so I am saving it for the very last shot in the dark.
Let's see.....similar diagnosis on my 1997 jeep wrangler. I recently changed out the MAP sensor which was cracked on the underside towards the connector, cost me $124; then I pulled out the idle air control motor/valve/sensor (call it) and cleaned it, problem got worse, idle very rough when coming to stop or at a stop....then engine TKO. Restart and headed back to dodge (around the corner block) Safe back at the fort. Hmmm, figured since I cleaned the IAC (visible signs of deteoration) and the sputtering gotten worse....that would be the obvious problem to fix. So, purchased online for the IAC costing me $56.00 plus five days waiting. Finally replaced the IAC and for a short drive around the block, looked like it was holding out. Idle ran like butter....until I went outside community lines and found myself sputtering up a hill and thinking "maybe, it was a bad idea to leave the safety of the fort.
What's next???? Change out the O2 sensor....fuel injectors????
Filled up the tank and dropped EFI gas treatment juice for possible effects.
Getting to be a quick learning mechanic, but need definitive answer and...HELP!!
More to the injury, deer season started and I am still trying to fix my ride.
