Stinger

What would be the easiest way to make a stinger? Size pipe, and what not...

I guess you could buy tube steel that looks the right size and use a pipe bender and then weld it on.

Since I do not have a shop with a welder, bender, metal cutter I had a friend of mine that does build mine. Cost me a whopping $50.

Still need to finish it with the grille hoop.

Unless you are doing serious rock-crawling,stingers are stupid and un-necessary,and really look cartoonish on the street. On the other hand,if you are off-road only, and need one-use schedule 40 1.5-3" pipe, and make sure you have a tubing bender from hell!Fab skills will be key,and good luck!

I build most of mine out of 2" .025 wall DOM...I wouldn't trust a sch40 pipe with that duty....possibly sch80

For what its worth there are a lot of people that like the look of the stinger. I myself do. I don't do a lot of wheeling because my YJ is my daily driver, and the wheeling I do certianly isn't rock crawling. Nothing more than a couple of feet anyway, but I have a stinger. I like the look and it does a good job of protecting my winch. Its 1 1/2" made from a tire carrier. Its not 6' long like some you see for a rock crawler, but looks better than a square push bar that some use for winch protection. But to each his or her own. I will add the link so you can take a look.

Not bad if I do say so myself........ Pic Heavy..

I built mine with DOM that my friend was using for his cage. I can get the specs. He has a bender (manual) so it isn't 100% perfect, but did the job. He also has a welder.

We also welded it to a 1/4" plate that was itself welded to my Jeeperman bumper. The weld points on the bumper are directly over the frame to ensure strength if ever needed. It isn't going anywhere.

that's a helluva good lookin' stinger. I like how the headlights are framed by the whole deal.

That actually happened by pure, 100% accident. I wanted to brace it and that is just how it ended up.

Once we finished it, I saw several from Genright and others that look remarkably similar. I just had the idea of what I wanted (maybe subliminally I remember seeing a similar design), and we made it happen. I didn't want a huge stinger, but more something to protect the winch, which really got hammered when my old light bar that was bolted on got bent back. Cracked the winch motor housing, motor cover, and the control assembly cover. Still works though. Just not nearly as pretty.

BTW: It was done with 1.75" .120 DOM tubing.

Sorry, but that looks like it would snap off with the weight of the jeep on it.

My jeep came with a "brush bar" and the PO got in a very minor fender bender and the only damage was to the hood where the stupid bar smashed it. It was only screwed into the bumper under the hooks. If you do make a stinger make sure to REALLY reinforce it for the forces that would push it towards the hood. Its kind of tricky to do with the little room.

No its cool, its just bolted on now but, with some big ass bolts. I havent been able to finish the project with the grille hoop and the actual welding to the bumper. I've spent $38,000 dollars so far to go to school and only make $100 a week. Its getting done, and its not at such an angle that it will get plowed by anything. I dont rock crawl but do offroad often.

Money spent on school is a much better option than money spent on the jeep. With time, the education will pay so you can put even cooler stuff on your jeep!

Yeah, I thought my big bolts would help, along with the gusseting... Here's what happened with the bolt-on version.

The lights that were there were destroyed too, well at least partially.

If it is bolted on, you see what can happen. That is one reason the grill hoop was added and why we added the 1/4" plating to the base to serve as the foundation for the stinger and grill. My experience has shown (at least to me) that bolts are not sufficient. Gusseting might help, but in my case, the point was so low by the base, it didn't do much good and just folded. Combination of bolts/washers, along with welds and better leverage I think is a stronger way to go.

You can still have one bolt on that will work. Mine is a slide on and bolt type so if I need more room on the trailer I can take it off
