Stock Tire carrier limit

Got my 35-12.5-15 on a steel wheel bolted to my stock carrier. Is this a bad idea? The tire/wheel seems about twice as heavy as the piddly stock wheel/tire.

It's probably a bad idea, and you should probably start researching aftermarket options.

BUT, it's certainly not an urgent thing. Keep it tight so there's no vibration. Make sure that the rubber stop/puck is hitting the tire, so it can move around. And try not to use your tailgate a whole bunch. People have survived that for years.

I would say if you do a lot of rough roads, or a lot of gravel washboard roads, then the frequent motion and vibration can cause damage more quickly.

Or if you open and close the tailgate a lot, you might want to consider aftermarket fixes sooner.

I have heard folks here say that after the years of carrying this size or even smaller that the door barely opens now. Probably too much stress on the hinges.

I did the same thing with my 35. Modded the 3rd brake light to see over the tire and bolted a little plate on the bumper to hold some of the weight of the tire. It worked fine till I bought an after market bumper/swing arm.

Check all the bolts that hold the carrier to the jeep, make sure they are tight and not rusted up to bad. As well, be sure your hinges are good. Its the bouncing that really causes problems with the weight back there pulling on the tailgate bolts. After wheeling or a bumpy ride, check 'em again...

I took my 3rd brake light off and the rubber stops on the tailgate to fit mine easier. Although this feed is making me thing i should look at other options....Anyone know if it's illegal to not have a third brake light? .... Sorry kindof off topic question.

I had 33's on steel wheels on my stock carrier it did just fine until I backed into a tree on the trail and cracked it then I was forced to buy a tire carrier and bumper

Been running my 33x9.5 spare for over 3 years without issue, and yes the key is to reduce the amount of vibrations and jarring to the gate by having the spare tightly against the rubber snubbers/spacers. Depending on the backspacing of the wheel, the distance may be just right or too short, in which you'll have to lengthen the snubbers with spacers, or too long (shorten by cutting).



I do have a support bracket tied in to my receiver...

It was the first thing that I removed when I got my Jeep, I thought it looked really out of place on a Jeep, whats the use of having it on if you can't even see it because of the spare. I haven't had any problems, but I think it all depends on where you live, just take it off, if the boys in blue have a problem they'll let you know.

I ran a 32x11x5x15 for 1 1/2 years and the hinges wore out, rattled like hell, and you had to lift on the gate to get it to close right.

I know someone who has had a 35 on the gate since the jeep was new, about 7 years now and it's fine. The secret is getting the weight onto the bumper as shown above.

As far as the third brake light, I don't think there is too much enforced about having it but I'm sure it really comes down to you local law officers and inspection. The stock light fit over my 33 but for looks I made one to fit into the center of the spare like in the picture above.

Ok, coupled with the fact I need to get my hilift on the outside of my jeep, and possibly place for Jerry can, can anyone offer leads on decent bumper/tire carriers? Time to throw more money at the veh-hikkle.

First of all, the factory tire carrier is not even close to being strong enough for a 35 inch spare tire. Mine cracked and failed carrying a 33 inch spare tire.

The spare tire carrier I can recommend is made by Off Road Fabricators in Arizona. One very nice thing about it is that it will work with any bumper since for more strength, it does not bolt to the bumper. Instead, it bolts through the body to hidden brackets bolted to the rear roll bar bases. It's about the strongest and totally sag-free spare tire carrier available.

Whatever bumper/tire carrier you look at, I highly recommend one that uses a axle spindle for the hinge. Makes it very strong and easy to maintain. If you get a bumper with a receiver hitch built in you will need to tie it to the frame. Rokmen has a kit for that.

It's funny that you would say that as both Blaines and Kats TJ have 35's hanging on the gate and have for years. And both gates open and close smoothly...

I have 33's and decided not to chance the problems at all. Last year I got a HighRock(owned by Bestop) tire carrier and it mounts to the body and ties into the rollbar mount like the one Jerry described, also has a backing plate for the lower mount too. This one is rated for only 35" tires or 200 pounds though I am sure when I get them mounted to 3/16 steel(or aluminum) rear armor it will be able to hold alot more. It opens and closes with the tail gate so there are no extra steps in getting to the back of your Jeep. Which was one of the big factors I chose it over bumper mounted carriers that latch in place. My Jeep is a DD and I need quick access to my "cargo area" for the groceries.

Also notice I ditched the 3rd brake light altogether for the much better relocated license place mount and light. It has a plate light and 3rd brake light built in. The sad thing is mine didn't come with the stock light and I went out and bought one for 50 bucks just to trash it not more that 2 months later, though the wires came in handy.

to dark for pics but it bolts on easy, tire doesnt move and it misses the bump stops, i may need to add spacers to those but so far this is a good mod

I'm not sure what you are trying to do here but I don't know what's funnnier... your claim or...

Unsupported, neither the hinges nor the mount are strong enough for a 35" tire. When closing either of Blaine's tail gates, the spare tire has to be lifted up as it is closed so its weight is resting on the rear bumper.

So your claim that the factory spare tire carrier being able to support the weight of a 35" or bigger spare tire without problem is pretty silly. Blaine readily tells anyone who asks him that neither the factory spare tire mount nor the tail gate hinges are strong enough for a 35" spare tire without added support and modifications which take the weight of the spare tire off the bracket and hinges.

That's not what he told me when he showed both his and Kats gate but ok Jerry I suppose I hallucinated it. I know hers has a currie bumper with the tailbones on it but he didnt say anything to me about reenforcing the carrier itself although the bumper supports some of the weight. As far as his rig goes it does have his bumper on it but that's fine I guess it's all in my imagination. What is true is that it is not on a swing out it's on the gate.

Its a state to state thing, but most say yes, because its federally mandated and they wont get there federal money for highways if they don't write it into law.

that being said I removed mine and I've passed inspections and been pulled over and no one has said anything...its kinda one of those outta sight, outta mind things, you see them so regularly you forget about them, especially since if you remove the jeeps 3rd brake bracket you cant tell its missing to begin with.

having said that I will get pulled over tomorrow for that one reason now

Yeah, sorry if this is a bit of a thread jack, but I'm in the market for a Wrangler myself and was wondering if 31x10.5x15's (Duratracs) would be ok for the stock carrier. I know this is about larger tires, but I just wasn't sure if what I'm interested in would eventually cause a problem as well.

Excellent. Whenever I buy my Wrangler an OR-Fab is in order down the line at some point but knowing that will help my confidence a lot!

All this talk about tire size on the tailgate is really irrelevant in the generic sense....What does matter is overall weight and placement of the weight, or moment. Granted, when you get to 35's with 10 ply equivalent sidewalls, you are overloaded for the stock design. Even a perch to sit the weight on when wheeling is a false sense of security due to the rocking of the assembly relative to the vertical plane while wheeling. Radius of gyration and moments take into account, not only the total mass of the assembly, but what is the mass doing from the attachment point. Well, in a spare tire case, it is not linear, mass is very little from the axial center-point until you reach the bead area, then increases exponentially as you run up the sidewall, then another big jump in mass as you reach the tread.......

My new 33x12.50x15 Load rate C Duratracs mounted on the Ion Alloy 15x8 wheels weigh (78 pounds) exactly 8 pounds less than my original 245/75/16 MT/R's Load rating E on stock 16" Rubicon wheels (86 pounds). When you account for the extra moment-arm of the less-than-desirable 3.5" BS on the Ion Wheels, as well as the radius of gyration, the load on the tailgate with the 33" tires and wheels is still less than the load (both static and kinetic) with stock tires. I know it seems hard to fathom, but Euclid isn't wrong!!

Don't sweat the petty things, I will run my stock spare tire holder and if it cracks, or perhaps when it cracks, I will address the issue. Failure of the bracket is normally not catastrophic, it will crack allowing you to at least get home and perhaps fix it !! For now, I'm having fun.......
