Stock Tire Carrier Modification

Hey guys I was wondering what you used to move the 3rd brake light high enough to fit your larger spare? I know many of you buy new swing out tire carriers, but for me its not in the funds right now as I'm about to regear. Plus, my 33" Duratracs apparently weigh 5lbs less that the stock rubicon tires. Anyways, post up your solutions. Thanks for the help!

I used some washers sandwiching a couple of big nuts. The stock bolts were long enough on my Jeep. Barely clears my 33" tire, but it works. Also, if you have aftermarket rims, make sure you space out your rubber tire snubbers so they still fit snug against the spare tire. Otherwise, you will have tailgate problems real quick. I used hockey pucks and longer bolts.

Check out your state laws for third brake lights. Some states don't require them.

Unless you feel you need it. In that case the washer deal is what I would do.

Alright sweet. Thanks for the ideas. I'll probably do what that link says. It should clear a 33 right? Also where do I find out if a 3rd brake light is required? I'm in VA if that helps.

I took mine off. I then wielded some 2x2 bars to the orginal plate, made a new plate 2 inches taller. That made it 2 inches out and 2 inches higher. It can handle up to a 35 now.
