stock tire carrier question

what is the max weight a stock tire carrier can safely handle without causing issues or damage to the carrier and/or the gate?

Not sure but I took mine off, I have seen a lot of things add to the tail gate with no problems,

i thought i could get away with a lighter 35, duratrac 35" (64lbs) and alloy rims (20lbs) but developed squeaks within a month

so less than 80lbs

Hey guys great input, but my simple question is what is the maximum weight that a standard TJ tire carrier can handle. I'm looking at Pro Comp 1069s (weight is 16 pounds) & the tires I'm looking at weigh between 50-55 pounds.

So, is a total weight of approximately 66-71!pounds too much for the stock tire carrier?

well a 31x10.5r15 goodyear wrangler tire is about 41 lbs and and the stock tj rims are about 20lbs so it is at least 60-62lbs

I had a 33 x 12.5 on mine and it is now broken. I have read some other threads on here before and they have some pictures of it breaking down body panel spot welds. I am looking to get a new rear bumper with tire carrier.

My son's 150lb friend sat on the spare time one time (while it was parked), hinges dont close as smoothly now lol. So less than 200lbs for sure lol.

If looking for the stock(ish) look I have the Rugged Ridge tire carrier that can hold up to a 35" tire. Looks and works good for the money!

My stock carrier broke at the welds with 31x10.5 general grabber rl mounted on black rock 15x8 steels. Tailgate is now warped some due to the weight. I can weigh the tire and wheel in the AM if you want an exact weight.

Bandit79, thanks.

I'm looking at the Pro Comp 1069s (16 lbs) with 32x11.5x15 BFG MT T/A KM2s (52 lbs) weighing in at 68 lbs or the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R Kevlar (55 lbs) weighing in at 71 lbs.

you guys must be doing something wrong. I have a 110lb 35 on there. I welded a support on the bumper, and spaced out the rubber bumpers to hold it tight. I probably have 15,000mi on it with no issues. If you let it rattle, it will break stuff. If you don't support it when closed, it will break stuff.

Please ignore my "welds" I didn't have 220 hooked up in my new garage so I used the torch. I was even too lazy to put a welding tip on it, so I used the cutting tip.

Put the 33 duratracs on mine. I did weigh it it before I put it on. I want to say it was 68 lbs. the rubber mounts weren't touching the tire correctly. Went to the hardware store and bought 3 of these rubber plugs. Used superglue gel and they have not moved lol. Real easy and no wobble.

X2 reference adding spacers to the stock rubber mounts. I used hockey pucks and longer bolts when I ran a 33' spare on the stock mount. No rattles or issues.
