Storage rack

Just bought a tj and love the thing. But I switched from a suv and lost a lot of storage space. I want to get a rear rack over the tire but I have not been able to find much on them. I am can able of building my own but I want to get an idea on mounting. My rear bumber is custom with a swing out 35" tire and may go bigger in the future so I will need to modify it to this. Maybe just some simple table. anyways let me see what u got and maybe where u got it if my custom.

No I really like that though and want to build a locking trunk compartment like that as well but I'm talking about the metal rack u see on all the jeeps that goes over the spare tire over the rear bumper

I recently built this one. I started with a Harbor Freight receiver rack, changed its dimensions a little, and built legs for it and a "stake pocket" bracket that mounts behind the spare tire carrier.

I've got an Exogate tailgate reinforcement/large spare carrier, so the extra weight/leverage of this rack isn't a problem, but I'm not sure I'd want to mount this on an unreinforced factory tailgate (especially with my 32" spare AND the jerry can rack ).

I run something similar to this:

904 - Sierra Rack & 905 - Sierra Rack II | Olympic 4X4 Products for over 60 years

As to jscherb's Safari Top, that is his custom top he has designed himself. Absolutely gorgeous, he has other tops as well that are well documented in the other forum (nearly 400 pages long). Looks like there may be a commercially available offering on 'em soon.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread...

Yes, I made it myself. But I've licensed the design to Gr8Tops, they plan to bring it to market. Here's a shot taken at Moab:

Here's a shot taken last week at Tincup Pass in Colorado, for this trip I swapped out the hard side panels for the roll-up soft sides:

Now back to the original topic of this thread, sorry for the interruption.

Here is what I did... I built my swing-away with a receiver tube on top.....

Then I took a $50 500lb capacity HF cargo carrier and shortened up the input to snug it up tight to the receiver and added 1x1 tubing from the swing-away main tube up to the back bottom of the cargo carrier...

I have had over 250 lbs in it and flexes very little.

Don't forget to search your local CL!! I found my Garvin Wilderness Rack for $300 ( sells for $840 on Q-Tec )

I have one that I ordered with my rock hard rear bumper/ tire carrier. I really like it. I do not know how to post a link, but 4wheel drive carries them.

Wow I love this idea and plan to emulate it. My problem is I have a tube swing away so it will take some thought as to how thanks for sharing.

Oh wow I really love this idea and plan to emulate it to my tube tire carrier. I will have to give it some thought on how I can adapt a receiver on top of the tube swing away. Thanks for sharing.
