stupid question

ive been reading a lot of post about water damage and what not. There are so many things to worry about before the water reaches the filter, like the diff., various breathers, and electronics. so here is my question. does the little not snorkel on the airbox mean anything? or serve any purpose?

It just raises the level of the actual intake of air. Other than that, I don't believe it serves any purpose.

i have found that with the little elbow intake thingy pointing up, it seems to act like a funnel when water is splashed up in the engine bay area. so i have rotated mine to point downish.

I don't believe anything you do can make a vehicle absolutely safe to go through water. I do know that you need a heck of a lot more than just a snorkel to be effective.

Kyle has a good tip, though. It makes perfect sense, but I hadn't thought of it.

Supposedly it increases the speed of air into the throddle body thus making the noise of air entering it quieter.
1997 Jeep Wrangler SE with lots of goodies.
