Sudden loss of power

I am having a loss of power that just started today. I was driving on the highway going about 65 when the engine just cut out and started up on its own. I took the next exit and it died at the end of the exit and would not restart for about 5 minutes. I had about a 1/4 tank when it happened, so I filled up just to be safe. It ran fine and got me back to the office. About 4 hours later I headed home and about halfway there it did it again, a loss of power followed by it starting on its own then when I stopped at the light it died. Luckily it started back up and I was able to get home. I ran the code reader and nothing came up. I checked the battery cables and they are tight and clean. I'm at a loss Any ideas?

I didn't include it a 2000 TJ 4.0 I just did a 2" lift a couple of weeks ago, oil is good too. And about 2 months ago I put in new spark plugs with the correct gap.

I would lean towards your fuel pump on its way out.

A few years ago, I owned a 1999 TJ. Occasionally on the highway the engine would cut out and come back when I ran over the raised lane markers. Took the vehicle in to the dealer probably half a dozen times to no avail (intermittent problem). Make a long story short the problem turned out to be the connector that enters the main engine computer. With your engine at idle try tapping on the connector with a screwdriver handle if the engine dies and comes back--that's your problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, I checked the connections at the computer, and nothing. I did notice that the gas gauge, signals and radio sometimes don't work when I start it. If I turn it off and restart they come on. Could this be a battery issue?

I would check all of the vehicle grounds. Find a wiring diagram and make sure that they are clean and tight. I have seen loose ground straps do some funny things, and it only takes one bad ground to screw it up. I have had a few bad ignition switches do this when the internal contacts become gummed up with carbon tracking. All of the main power leadsfrom the fuse panel are controlled by the ignition switch. Good luck!

This right here is a great place to start. Clean the IAC and throttle body and see if it happens again. While my IAC has never crapped out at highway speeds it did cause very similar symptoms at under 25.

The IAC (Idel Air Control) will only function when no throttle is applied. When you were doing 25 mph you were probably barely on the throttle. IAC won't cause the gauges to stop working and then restart after one key cycle. I'm leaning towards an electical issue within the ignition switch. Clean the IAC and throttle body just for maintanece purposes.

Update-I cleaned the AIC and it seems to be running fine, except for the angry sparrows that popped up on Monday.
