Sunrider vs. California Soft Top

Making my decision about what replacement top to buy. Any opinions? I read in another thread that Mopar has a "sunrider" top too? Any info on that would be appreciated. I can't seem to pull it up on the net.

Do not confuse the Factory Sunrider with the Bestop Sunrider. Chrysler came out with a factory sunrider soft top for SWB TJ's in 2005. I believe the Mopar part number for a black SWB sunrider top is Part #82210805. Bestop is the OEM supplier for Chrysler's soft tops and the factory Mopar Sunrider uses the stock frame with the added hinge. The Bestop brand Sunrider used their Supertop frame. A lot of people do not like the Supertop as much as the stock frame.

Sunrider

Wow! Neil. I didn't know that. I'll do more research on it. I really appreciate that information. I'll let you know what I decide.

Neil,
The Mopar website doesn't mention that I can use the existing framework. See below:

Mopar OEM Jeep Wrangler "Sunrider" Style Soft Top 97-06 SWB
This complete soft top and folding framework is made of a tough, vinyl-coated cotton/poly blend and features two quick-release header latches to raise and lower with minimal effort. Zip-out windows, heavy duty seams and an exclusive door frame system minimizes wind noise and water leaks.
New Sunrider design features an easy and convenient fold-back sunroof for open-air driving enjoyment. Top is available only in black with clear windows.

I hope you are right. I'll call them tomorrow.

You'll need Mopar Sunrider hardware to use a Mopar Sunrider top. If your factory hardware isn't Sunrider specific, it won't work.

I agree with Neil, there have been several mentions that the Bestop Supertop is not what most would desire. However their Replace-A-top is excellent.

You need to first establish which hardware you have, then decide which way you want to go. If you have factory hardware, then the Sailcloth R-A-T is the best route probably.

You cannot use you existing frame (I did not say you could). It does not fold.

FYI, this happens to be a project of mine for this weekend. You can cut and modify the stock frame to fold like the sunrider.

When it's time to replace the OEM top on my 04 I would like to switch over to the factory sunrider top. Do you think I need to replace all of the framework or only the front section. BTW I have access to OEM parts at wholesale prices so it may be cheaper to go OEM instead of retail aftermarket.

I think you only need to replace the front bow, and door surrounds. We just swapped to the sunrider on the JK, and those were the only differences, as far as I can tell.

Like I said, I'm doing to my stock frame. If you look at the sunrider, the hinge ins nothing more than the knuckles used at the roll bar with a plate connecting them. Stu-Offroad simply cut his without a hinge. Here are pictures of a hinge someone made. There is a "kit" on ebay for 75.00 to convert your stock frame or by 20-30 in parts and do it yourself.
