Surf Board Racks....Yet again

I am looking to get a rack system for my Jeep. I have a soft top and want to be able to carry the surfboards with the soft top up (going down to the OBX). I want to be able to carry passengers. I want the rack to be able to come on and off.

I have seen people talking about using soft racks over top their soft top but I am unsure how you would attach them. It is very easy with the top down but with the top up that could be a problem. If someone does this could you please show me a picture with the attachment points.

I have an interesting idea in mind for a removable rack for the Jeeps but it would require some fabrication. What it would be is a system that would fit in a trailer hitch on the rear of the vehicle. That would be the rear connection point. The front would have some D rings on it so you could take nylon straps and maybe attach it to the place on the hood where you tie down the windshield if you drop the windshield.

I will put a diagram of what I am thinking about. Do you think that this would work if I was able to get someone to fabricate it?

If anyone has some experiences that they could share about this please let me know what they think or give me some suggestions.

The middle of the rack would be steel that would look like this.

You could build or buy something like this:

Kargo Master Congo Cage Support - 5031-1, Softtop Jeep Racks

I think Thule has a similar setup.

I have looked at those a lot and they seem to be a common solution. I want the rack to be easily removed and that is also somewhat expensive.

Do you have to have a special tool to remove some of the screws in order to install something like that? If so where do you get it?

I actually just came back from the OBX and had to take a surfoard for my kids, now granted it is one of those learning foam top boards but a surfboard none the less. what I did with the top up was slid the board up over the roll bar in between the soft top and the roll bar. I do this with my boogie board also. slips in there nice and snug and doesn't move at all. I just roll the back window up and hang the fins out of the back. You may want to wrap a towel around it to add some thickness to it, or if you have a board bag that would work too
