sye install

Have a couple week break in wheeling trips so I'm hoping to get my sye done. I have everything ready to go except snap ring pliers. Everyone always mentions that a nice set is needed..just wondering what is a "nice set" and where to get them. Places local to me are the typical Sears, Lowes, all the auto stores and of course anything online. Not looking for anything crazy expensive as this will be the only use they see more than likely

What you want are lock ring pliers that open widely enough, not all do. I had two very good quality sets in my tool drawer and neither opened widely enough. I finally found a set that opened widely enough on a Matco Tool truck parked at a car dealership. Snap-On trucks have them too. I've been told Sears now carries lock ring pliers that open widely enough but they didn't when I installed my SYE 12-13 years ago. NAPA didn't have them either.

Ok. How will I know if they open wide enough?

Mine open a full inch at the pins that go into the lock ring's holes which is wide enough for a SYE installation. That doesn't sound like much but not all can spread open a lock ring that much.

Ok. Also as you can obviously tell I'm no tool expert but are snap ring and lock ring pliers different

Actually, I should have said snap-ring pliers for a SYE installation. So long as they open to 1" at the tips you should be fine.

These are what I use...

In addition to a really good pair of snap ring pliers....get a pair of circle ring pliers too. You'll have exactly these clips to contend with. The circle ring will be a bear to remove / install with out these pliers. I did my Dad's STE two weeks ago. It was a whole lot easier doing the SYE than my 4" spring lift the weekend before. He had a RC 4" lift on his 06' TJ and it vibrated. I installed a Zone 4" on our 06' TJ and it doesn't vibrate....therefore I wont be doing a SYE on our TJ. I believe I bought my circle ring pliers at Sears - Craftsman 25 -30 yrs ago....the snap ring pliers are Snap -On brand. Each of those rings are about 1 1/2" diameter.

The top pair of lockring pliers is all I used on my SYE install.... there were no snaprings in my 231 to mess with when I did my SYE and Jerry is right... you need them to open about 1" or a little bigger...

Yep top pic is what you want, lock ring pliers, all over Ebay, Sears etc....
Snap ring pliers might work but I broke the tips off of a couple of pairs of mine so I would rather use the right tool than ruin the wrong one.

In my Dad's 2006 TJ he had both the circle ring and snap ring....these shown are the actual ones I removed. If you look in you tube and search for "Advance Adapters how to Jeep SYE install" its shown there.
