I have a 2001 Sahara and its got a blown sub (stock). I thought it was the old soundbar that was blown so I replaced it with a VDP 6 speaker sound bar. But it still sounds horrible due to the blown sub. So ive decided I want to put a system in it when ever I get the money for it.
The only problem is I don't know anything about systems. I know I want 2 12"s. but I dont know what else il need other then an amp. I don't know what size amp I need tho. I have a Sony CDX-GT350MP head unit. And everything but the soundbar and head unit is stock. I don't care that much about thumping bass because I don't really listen to rap. I just want good sound.
I have a awesome system in my wrangler... Except when I start driving! The wind noise, tire noise, intake noise, and exhaust make it sound almost stock...but I guess 2. 12s may change it up a bit!
If your worried about good sound then nix your two 12" idea...I think thats overkill. Honestly a single sealed 10" or dual sealed 10" with a decent amp will do you right.
If you still have a backseat, i would suggest a pre-made box for the rear of your Jeep....online (there are several). If you shop online, you can get a "good enough" amp online to run it as well.
Every time I put something in my Jeep I ask myself, how pissed am I going to be if somebody jacks it...well of course I'll be pissed, but it definitely has an effect on the quality of the amp and subs I put in.
I recently ditched my backseat (and pre-made dual 10's) and gone with a single thin 12" pioneer and believe it is easily adequate.
oh, and you might as well put an amp kill switch in, 'cause the second you take the top off.....the amp and subs are rendered worthless.....no external sound space.....IMO. :whistling:
The only dual 12's i've seen in a jeep ddin't have enough sound space within the box to truly support their full capacity. Which is why you see downfire 10's as real popular in Jeeps. Their is enough room for them to fit at the bottom of the space behind the backseat and the box to go up to give them full range.
I was Thinking about taking out the back seat anyway and making some sort of cover that I can lock so I have more storage room. And I don't get asked to haul everyone around since I'd only have 1 passenger seat.
Even with the top off, two 12"s are overkill. I did this semi-professionally (worked for equipent for my car) years ago. You lose a LOT with the top off, not in volume, but in clarity. You need to strive for great clarity while stationary to overcome that. I need my backseat occasionally, and need the back 'area' a lot for my dog, so it's off-limits for speakers, mostly. My factory sub may or may not be blown, but it's completely non-functional at the moment. I'm going to tear into it on Friday to try to figure it out. If I can't get it working, I'm re-building the whole center console with a carpeted plywood box containing an 8" sub with about 100w of power (plenty, as long as it's good clean power). I'll use the stock armrest/locking lid and keep the stock cupholders, and forward of them. I'm hoping to keep the stocker and get it working. This isn't a great vehicle for a system unless you are willing to dedicate the vehicle to said system. BOLT EVERYTHING DOWN!!!
I was told I should put in 2 12"s or 2 10"s so I figured biggers always better. And there wasnt a whole lot of price difference in speakers. But if I can keep the back seat with the 2 downfire 10"s il do that just incase I'd ever need a back seat. What's a good brand of speakers? And will I beable to use the sound bar too?
I also have a glasspack. So theres just a little bit of added noise to drown out.
I pulled my backseat to do my bedliner project and never put it back. But, even though I rarely used it, I've come to realize it was a good cover for both of my amps and placement for my subs.....I don't think my boxer puppy will care either way...backseat or not....ha. Actually, I've recently considered getting a roof rack for trips....just on the fence.

You *might* be able to fit 10(s) downfire behind the backseat. Not true for 12(s) if they're in a decent enclosure. There will be more difference from the enclosure and how it's mounted than in size of speakers. Attaching it very strongly to the body of the vehicle makes a world of difference from just sitting it there. (And you may actually get to keep it)
I think I'm going to do the 2 downfire 10"s they'll be easier to install and a little more hidden in the back. And I don't really want anything too crazy. But how do I know what amp il need?
I don't have any money for it atm. I'm just trying to figure out what I need and about how much it would cost and save up for it. I dont want To go cheap and sacrifice quality tho. But it is going into a jeep with a soft top so probably under 300 altogether for the speakers, amp, enclosure, and wiring.
ebay is your friend.... I person like Alpine or infinity for component speakers (soundbar/dash) and there any where from $50-$80 a pair. Now subs I would look at the 10" kicker comps for around $60 a piece. I've owned them and loved them. Now for your amp I've always used SPL amps, for 2-10" subs I would look for around a 600w 2-channel amp for around $80-$100. A sealed box is a must for any sub if your looking for down low bass. A sealed box will cost around $50. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SUB PREOUT ON YOUR CD DECK.
Ok. How do I know what wattage amp to get for the speakers? because I don't know what speakers I'm getting yet. It all depends on how much money I have and il probably get some of the cheapest since its going into the back of a jeep.

If you're looking for a cheap fix until you can afford a new sound system, You can repair the "blown" sub for around $20 by refoaming the the sub. I have successfully done this with the Infinity sound system in my old KJ and recently did the one in my TJ. What usually happens is the foam around edge of speaker dryrots after several years. the refoam kit comes with new foam ring and the glue. You carefully cut the old foam away from the paper cone with an X-acto knife or razor blade and glue the new ring in place. Mine sounds good as new and you can do it in less than an hour. Google speaker refoam kitsunk:
You can even see how its done on YouTube
I don't even want to mess with the stock sub. It sounds ok playing country but anything else sounds like crap. The only reason I want to get a system is so I can listen to more music, and it won't sound horrible. I have the new soundbar but the sub ruins the sound if the song has any bass.
I just measured the space behind the seat to the tailgate and it's under 10". So I don't thing the 10"s will fit. If I take out the back seat and rig up some kind of plywood locking trunk deal that covers the space from the front seats to the back of the jeep. Would that solve the no external sound space problem with the 12"s because if I can get bigger subs for close to the same price il do that.
If I add the subs and amp will I still beable to keep the sound bar and everything with the stock wiring? Or will I have to replace it all? Because the sound bar is new and dash speakers are fine.
