tailgates

so i decided i needed to make back door into a tailgate to miss my tirecarrier to open the whole way so i started and ofcourser the bolts were stuck so i drilled out the heads and used an easyout screw remover and the old bolts came right off of the tail gate . i wanted to leave the brakets on the back panel off the jeep because its not painted underneith so i need to get the hinge arm off of the bracket does anyone no how to remove the arm off from the brakets

fold down, CJ style rear gate. There are writeups all over the place that show you how do to that.

Ah, fold down tailgate as verses a swing out tailgate. Guess the "backdoor" part confused me.

Theres also a guy that sells a kit to do this. If I remembered the name I'd post it, but search youtube for "TJ tailgate" it'll prolly show up.

yea its a nice kit, a little pricey for me...but i've seen post of people doing the work them self for well under $50 i believe...

This conversion is on my list...I just need to get a swing out tire carrer, OR quit carrying a spare.

ParaCAD, keep us informed if you do it, I'm interested also and have been wondering which tire carrier to get.

I considered doing the same thing until I realized why Jeep switched the tailgate from a bottom-hinge to a side-hinge. It's MUCH easier to access tools, offroad gear, etc. when you don't have to lean/reach over a drop-down tailgate.

I confirmed that while offroading with a guy last year that modified his TJ to have a drop-down tailgate and he said he wished he hadn't done it. He agreed that it looks cool but it makes access into the rear of the Jeep much harder.

That is why Jeep switched the tailgate from a drop-down to a side-opener.

Makes sense...I didn't think about that really as my tj is at stock height, and its easy enough for me to lean over the side with the top down, or in the back...but i'm sure if you have a decent lift, it could cause problems...

I tend to build everything my self so I already built myself a tire carrier and bumper. wafter build the swing out tire carrier I decided that I wanted my hi lift attached to it so I made a small plate and top bolt to hold it and attached the jack. Then when I tried to open my tailgate it made contact with the swingout portion which was already tight against my taillight. So I grabbed some hinges I had laying around and drilled some holes threw in some rivnuts and vwalla a fold down gate . ( I know not exactly the "proper" way to do it but it work . Now if I could just get the old swing out arms off it would be perfect .

The guy at this site SWAG OFF ROAD.COM sells a kit. He said it'll hold 400lbs and has a ton of pictures of customers who have converted theirs.
