Taking the doors off... Is that Legal in PA?

Just a dumb question... I live in PA and I want to take the doors off my Jeep, but I don't want interference from the 5.0 since there would be no mirrors on the thing... does anyone know if this is a big deal? has anyone else had issues getting harassed by the cops? J.

Usually taking a safety device off is frowned appon. I think the side view mirrors are a fed thing...

Most states require just a driver side outside mirror with the doors off, or on for that matter. A friend of mine uses a mirror from a moped, it's a mirror so it's legal!

I've passed numerous cops with no mirrors. I've got a mirror I hold out the side if I have to.

There are not laws that I'm aware of prohibiting removing your doors. You can technically take the doors off ANY vehicle and drive around. As far as mirrors I haven't had any for quite a while and have gone by many cops. Don't know what mirrors laws in Colorado are though.

you need 2 rear facing mirrors and one has to be on the drivers side. if you have mirrors you shouldn't be pulled over for having your doors off if your doing every thing else legal. with out mirrors they might pull you over.

not all states. Only law in ct states that you need a rear facing mirror in the center OR on the drivers side, not both. There are some laws that pertain to vehicles at the time of manufacture, but very little about driving.

When I got my JKU the dealer salesman that also has a JKU told me that this style jeep is the only American made vehicle that a person is allowed to remove the doors and drive the vehicle on the streets/highways. Do this on another vehicle and the police will tell you just how illegal it is. Probably because the first ones had no doors.

Save the PITA and the cash on the relocation brackets. For starters they make it suck when you put the doors back on. The doors hit the mirrors if you put em back on. So you wind up swapping the mirrors back and forth and back and forth.

Just get you some motorcycle mirrors...they look cool...fit in the hinge hole and are easy to on and off. Trust me on this one!

Check out the Pennsylvania section of the forum: Door or no doors, that's my question!! this thread has tons of people from all over the PA and their opinions/experiences. Personally, I take off my doors whenever I can and put some cheap mirrors in the empty hinges. Have never had a problem with the police. I live in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

It depends on your needs. If you leave the doors off all summer then it doesn't matter. For 15$ they get the job done, and I can see where if you were constantly taking your doors on and off it could be a pain, but last summer I literally never put my doors back on once.

I will say though if you lose the bushings for those brackets the ears will bend in when you tighten down the mirrors. For that reason I've left my mirrors on my doors and have just decided to risk getting stopped for not having mirrors.

I know in va you must have 2 mirrors that can see 200ft. So I have a set of mirrors that go into the hinge where my doors were formerly. They're pointless because they shake so much but hey, its legal.

Where at in PA are you? I have a set of mirror relocation brackets you can have. I don't need anymore and I'm about 10 miles south of Hanover, PA. I'm using a $15 mirror I found at PepBoys mounted in the hinge. Like the Capn said, it's a PITA to go back and forth.

It seems like such an obvious offense, driving with no mirrors, but it's so obvious that police don't even realize they aren't there. I'm in MD where they're anal about crap like that, drove the beltway, to VA where they're even more anal as posted above, TWO mirrors, on their highways, passed literally 50 police (concert), sat next to them, they just don't realize it's illegal or don't notice it. I was sitting waiting to turn and 12 police cars passed me on their way to a shooting range out where I live and again nothing, there's a cop car in my driveway almost everyday, never said anything. I don't even think it's a ticket, it's a fix it I believe, and since I'm not even inspected yet I don't worry about it.

I don't know where you live, but in Maryland it IS illegal to have no doors, the law is you must have door handles, and removing the doors, well, you get it. Again, it's one of those laws that only Jeepers know, not the police. Heck, I doubt even most Jeepers in MD know that it's illegal, police just don't know, the only cop that would even have a chnace of knowing that would be a cop with a Jeep, but I'm 99.9% sure he wouldn't pull a fellow Jeeper over for that, unless he's a huge douchebag or is just bored and wants to talk Jeeps.

Tube doors have door handles. You could just have a bar from the hinge to the striker.

Here in Indiana it is just one(1) rear facing mirror.

So if I have doors off I have the rearview, if I have my windshield down I only need a driver side mirror.

Honestly, a Jeep is such a small vehicle I can see every foot around the darn thing. And any cop that has a mind most likely wont hassle you about petty things, most of them are outdoorsy type people and Jeeps are that niche so they mostly give Jeepers (atleast in Indiana) a break. I think most Jeep owners are pretty good citizens thus we have a good rep.

It doesn't matter, like I said I may be one of 12 people in the state that knows that's a law.

I have not had any problems on the days I get to go doorless here in Connecticut. I have foot pegs and drive around bare foot with one hanging out the door. Still no problem.

I talked to the local cops about it and they told me that it was illegal to drive with the doors off. I only asked because i got a ticket for my tires sticking out past the flares and i don't want another ticket
