Tell me everything and anything. 97 TJ

Just picked up a 97 and dont know much about it. Instead of researching and trying to look up I figure yall could tell me everything about my jeep while im outside cleaning it and my other truck. Like I said its a 97, 2.5l 5 speed. 33in tires. snorkle kit. soft top. 2in shock spacer and 1in body (soon to go and replace with a suspension). 205000 miles origianal on the motor is what i was told.

what im looking for; what kind of trans, transfercase, axles, fluids and how much and what to switch to, gear ratios, what to espect to tear up on normal driving with as many miles its got. anything yall got I will listen. anything advice is greatly appriciated.

Also living in Fayetteville NC, so if your around and you go out riding trails im always looking to go. I know a few places around here.

likely have the ax5 tranny. prob Dana 30 front axle and 35 rear. as for fluids you should have asked the previous owner what he used. the gearing is probably 3.73. just google all of it.

with 33 inch tires you should swap to 4.10 or 4.56.

Your '97 TJ SE has:

2.5L engine
AX-5 5-speed transmission
Dana 30 front axle
Dana 35c rear axle
4.10/4.11 axle ratios (.01 difference between front and rear axles)
NV-231 2.71:1 transfer case

For 33" tires, you should regear your axles to 4.88 which will restore the power loss caused by the taller/heavier 33" tires.

To Jerry, I have exactly what you described and it appears my rear axle just went. I have (and would like to keep) 33s on it. Should I upgrade to a Dana 44? Not sure what my best course of action is and since it has to be fixed I'd rather do it right.

Your rear Dana 35c axle is very 'iffy' with 33" tires... likely ok on the street so long as there is no locker installed, but if you push things on the trail, locker or not, the axleshafts inside are living on borrowed time.

To make a solid recommendation on if you should replace it with a Dana 44 or just rebuilt what you have or just replace it with a used Dana 35c (which can commonly be found in good running condition for <$300), we'll need to know how your Jeep is used, how hard it is pushed offroad if it goes offroad, and if there is a locker installed or if you would like to install a locker.
