Tell me if I'm being taken for a ride...

I need new tires and want to get 31 X 10.5 on my stock TJ rims. I decided to do a bit of online research to get prices on some tires. I want to go with Firestone Destination A/Ts.

I made the great mistake of stopping at Town Fair Tire on the way home from work today and asking for a quote. They're almost reluctant to put tires on that big saying that the stock tire is 30 X 9.5. They say the tire will start to kind of cave in and wear out quicker. Lalalal other b/s too stopped paying attention.

So he decided to quote me a tire that I didn't even want saying that the Firestone's are being discontinued. Anyone know if this is true? So he quotes me this for a set of 5 Toyo Tires.

$157.64 per tire X 5 = $788.20

$11.95 Comp. Balance X 5 = $59.75

$2.95 Valve Stem X 5 = $14.75

$49.00 Alignment = $49.00

$57.00 Road Hazard = $57.00

Grand Total of about $ 1028.46

I think that's incredibly too high and I would have better luck actually going to a Firestone dealership to get everything done. He said the BF's would be about the same price. I really think its a total rip off right there. Whatcha all think?

The prices don't look bad. I think valve stems should be free. 4 Wheel Parts shows the Toyo AT in that size being $147.99 ea. Discount Tire would not list it for me.

i usually get my tires from tirerack.com their prices are very good and their shipping is reasonable. i get them mounted & balanced at the local garage (costs me about $40 for all 5 w/ stems). i think you are getting ripped off. $157/tire sounds pretty steep for 31'" Toyo's, and why are they going to do an alignment? Plus that road hazard thing is bull, just another way to squeeze some money out of you. That's just my opnion though.

I figure he requested an alignment, they don't usually just add that in. Its easy to do yourself. I also have never purchased the Road Hazard, but I know a lot of people who do and were glad they did.

I think it's a little much for all terrains, you might as well get the bfg a/t's

Tire rack's price for the Bfg a/t's Click Here

For the price your paying for those, you might as well get these for only a few bucks more a tire: Click Here

Good points everyone! Yeah I see the Firestone's I want on tirerack which are $111.00 which is awesome. To shop them from tirerack it would be about $102 which came out to $131.00 per tire which isn't bad.

$657.00 for all 5 and a friend of mine at a local garage said he would put them on for $10 a tire.

The guy at Town Fair Tire just started throwing in the alignment and road hazard shit figuring I wanted it.

But for about $700 to get everything done I need is awesome. I save $300 which I could use for paying my other bills. I'm also actually gonna go over to the firestone dealership tomorrow and see what they can do for me.

Do you sell the Federal brand?

Have you ever used them?

Got any feedback?

Most mud tires are noisy now ain't they...

I'm just curious about another alternative to the high price of tires these days. Given the current state of the economy ya gotta cut costs wherever ya can.

Price and tire brand aside, I would have walked out of there the moment he said 31" tires would cave in and wear quicker. I'd NEVER buy from a sales rep that was that ill-informed about the products he sells.

Why not just find a set of tires and wheels off a 06 or under Rubicon . . . lot's of us take them off when we go with bigger tires. I see great deals on them quite a bit. In fact my buddy has a set of 5 . . . both the wheels and tires are like new sitting on his patio!. . . I think the tires have less than 100 miles on them. You'd pay way less, have cooler wheels, better tires (MTRs), and could throw yours up on Craigslist and come out way ahead.

Yeah I know this guy from town fair tire is going to call me this morning. I can actually get everything done at the Firestone Dealership for like $700 which isn't too bad. $1,000 f*&$ him.

Like what the hell is computerized balancing? I remember a day when everything was included into the price. What a douche.

One thing I learned a long time ago is it doesn't have to say BF Goodrich or Good Year on the side to be an wesome tire. I bought some 33" off brand tires with a warranty back in 2000 that lasted a long time and had a good warranty. May have paind 400 total out the door. The big companies sell tires under other names, sometines with the same tread pattern. The Dayton Timberline MT is a nice tire also.

kg4 has a good point, I have a set of Dean Wildcats on my cj7 and they are awecome, Dean tires area actually part of cooper tires, and MAXXIS tires are part of the tire company CST (or Cheng Shin Tire) there are a lot of off brand tires that are just a sister compant to a big tire co., michelin ownes BFG & Uniroyal. there are more but you get the picture

Computerized balancing is the current standard for reasonably sized tires these days. Tire and installation technology has come a long way from the plop a weight on and see how it spins days of old.

You're foolish is you aren't spin balancing (computer) this size tire. Unless you don't give a rip about life expectancy or it's just a trail rig.
