It's a manual knob that controls the temp via a stiff control wire. Check that the control wire that controls the heat valve up above the passenger-side footwell is still connected to the lever it controls. Maybe by jiggling the knob it allowed the control wire to come off.
not on my 2001. The stiff wire is now an electric motor that controls the flap between hot and cold incoming air. you turn the knob on the dash from red to blue and this motor adjusts the air deflector flap from the heater core to fresh air.
The motor is held in place by 3 5/16" hex screws. I was able to take off the motor, and manually move the flap to get me some cold air. I don't have time to properly repair it because i'm still unpacking, but i'll post back up when i get around to it.
