did some research the 03+ has the 42 rh auto as does the 98 Cherokee. would this swap to my tj be worth it if i could get ahold of one? The difference is a 4th gear which i believe would be a nice addittion

It's a bit more difficult than just swapping in the transmission, plus the 42RLE isn't exactly an upgrade. I'd take the 3 speed 32RH over my 42RLE any day.

Contact Teraflex and see what they have to say; it may be as simple as swapping the input shaft in the t-case to one that will work with your transmission.

That said, read a bit before installing it. I would buy one myself if I hadn't heard of so many people breaking theirs. You can find a few who have had good luck, but for the most part it seems like they break down a lot. I'd rather get the 241 t-case if I was looking for a 4:1 case. Of course if it's free, you can't really go wrong.

it wont mate to the trans the same. there are so many NP231 variations out there its not funny. But the guts aka the 4:1 kit will work in any NP231.

FYI the 98xj most likely has either a AX15 5 speed or AW4 auto

Yep the '98 Cherokee doesn't have the 42RLE which didn't come out until 2003. It had either the AX-5, AX-15, or AW4 automatic.
When you have a choice, buy American.

And in the case like the above have said, I believe the 231s have different mounting patterns. I've read about redrilling TJ cases to fit the AW4 conversion.
