The first one hurt!!

I'am referring to the first hole I drilled in my jeeps body. I installed my A to Z rocker guards tonight. All went well! Did not like drilling the holes. I'am thinking about Monstalining (not a word) Behind the guards when I do the tub, a little afraid of rust living in nepa. Ill post pics of themand new half doors tomorrow.

I'm looking at Rokmen sliders as my next upgrade, and the thought of drilling the rockers freaks me out too. I live in Ohio, where we salt the hell out of the roads, so rust will happen eventually. I've been told that spraying the rocker panel and inside of the rock slider with undercoating and assembling wet is the way to go, to seal out moisture.

Yes, those first holes DO hurt!
When I put my shorty corners on, I nearly died!

When you drill them out, use a self etching primer at least to coat the raw metal to help inhibit rust.

I'm not too sure about applying wet material underneath as a sealant, it might have pockets where moisture can hide and collect without evaporating.

I thought I was being pretty crafty when I came up with the idea of using marine grade silicone on the inside of my shorties. I put it on, used a 1/16" nylon tile trowel to make vertical lines down so that any moisture could drain out. It was like a skin coat, with drainage. I then let it dry for 24 hours, making it basically a very thin gasket that buffered the corner from the tub. Hopefully it will help prevent abrasion from mud and dust and keep the moisture out.

If I had it to do over again though, I'd have gotten the full corners - woulda, coulda, shoulda!

Rust? What is that? Here in the desert it must be illegal, we rarely see any.

Oh, wait, it must be a misspelling - you mean dust, not rust? We have plenty of that!

joesunlimited1, those look sweet though. I was wondering about the drilling......uuugh... just thinking about a drill and the paint, goes against everything I have ever worked for on a vehicle.

I could never figure out why some fear drilling a few holes into their Jeep. The factory punches/drills a ton of holes all over the Jeep during the manufacturing process and paint does a fine job of protecting them.

Drill the holes, smooth them if needed with a small rat-tail file, and then tab a little paint around the edges and that's it. Here in the southwest where rust is not a problem, I don't even bother with that half of the time.

Afterall, it's not like you plan to take the part off later where the holes would show.

i am going to have to do it sometime... maybe line the hole with POR-15 or something similar since you can't see it anyways.

You don't need POR-15 for a non-rusty hole, just dab the hole with nearly any kind of paint. I've even used my wife's fingernail polish since it already had a handy little brush. Or spray some Rustoleum into a little cup and use a model airplane paint brush. This is no big thing, a little paint and you're done.
