think I found my 1st jeep

Found a 1999 jeep wrangler 4x4 sport 5 speed with a 4.0. Has 160k miles.

Dealership had a pricetag of $8k talked them down to 6k after discovering an exhaust leak and a waterpump leak. The jeep drives fine and shifts smooth. The kbb price is about $6k thats what I talked them into. If my credit gets approved I will get it.

The only issue is the exhaust leak I hear when I test drove the jeep, it doesnt sound to bad, but Idk if this is a common issue with these jeepa or if this is something to avoid.

Any tips or suggestions on this?

In my area of ga jeeps are overpriced like crazy, so I feel as though im getting a good deal at $6k. But just not sure.

I recently bought a TJ for 6k, damn near same mileage, only difference is that mine is a 2000. I bought mine, and the blinkers ended up not working after I brought it home, and the CEL came on recently. The question you have to ask yourself is, can you do any of the repairs yourself or will you be paying out the nose for a mechanic? I'm in PA and the Jeeps are just so damn expensive, finding a nice solid Wrangler for around 6k is a real task.

I don't regret buying my Jeep at all, even with it's issues, then again, it's a TJ.. it'll have it's issues!

I bought my TJ for 6,500 last year. 211,000 miles in a '97. It has a crack in the exhaust, but I'm not too worried about it. Shelling out the $100 buck to just get an aftermarket one one there (purely for sounds.) figured since I have to do one anyway... The only other issues I've had were a crack in the fuel line ($350 fix) and my t-case came out of adjustment ($20 fix). So far it's a dream and I'm really happy with my purchase, since I've been researching since and similar TJs are going for about 9k-12k here (mine was already heavily modded).

Just my $0.02. You're gonna have some issues with a TJ, but you're gonna have enough fun to make it worth it!

Dang! you guys got your tj's for a steal. i paid 10.5k for mine at the dealership, 2000 tj sport 4.0 manual with hard top. It came with brand new bfg at's and was completely intact. i would say pristeen if not for a few scratches on the side. kbb has it at 10k so im not too sad. had 127,000 miles on it.

that is normal to feel that way, only cure is to look at as many TJ's as needed until you are satisfied you are indeed getting a good deal. if this is the 1st one you've really looked at closely i'd look at at least a few more before deciding. i am in CT where nice TJ's are priced way above NADA/KBB, especially in the summer months. i paid a tad over NADA but i got what i wanted: a well cared for, unmodified, one-owner, highly-optioned TJ in the best color combo. good luck with your search.
2002 Wrangler Sahara, all stock, 5-speed, Dana 44, dual tan tops, 2nd owner.

2008 Hemi Grand Cherokee Limited 4X4, Quadradrive II, original owner, 24,000 miles.

The exhaust leak is probably a cracked manifold. Haggle more. Don't pay kbb price if its got issues.

That is actually not too bad form a dealer. Keep looking on craigslist for them. It has been two years that I have owned my 97 Sport 4.0 now but I paid 5K with 121K miles, full doors with hard top. Bought my running 97 2.5 SE a few months ago for $500 So deals are out there. Just look.....QUICK!!!

prices for jeep vary so much. my last TJ (already lifted & had 173k on the odometer) i bought at a decent price for $4000. had to travel north to get it. did a couple things to it & ended up selling to a guy in OK (i think that was where he was from) for about $6500.

but i couldn't get close to that trying to sell it locally. kept getting low balled & best i was offered was $3500.

my current 99 i got from down south. 41k original miles, original owner, already modified with anything i would have ever wanted to do myself & then some. the only thing that would have made it better is if it was an auto. only thing i had to do was add my winch b/c he didn't sell it with the warn he had on it. got it for $9500.

1999 TJ Sport
1999 Ram 2500 (daily)
2008 DGCV SXT (family)
2005 LS430 (wife's)
