Thinking about getting a longer driveshaft with no SYE

I have a 4inch Rough Country suspension lift with a transfer case drop bracket. I'm thinking of just getting a longer driveshaft to eliminate the need for a drop bracket. I know that the best way would be to install a SYE with a new shaft, but I'm trying to save some money and time. What do yall think of me just getting a longer drive shaft made and taking out the drop bracket instead of installing a SYE with a new shaft? Will this even work?

Hank,

If you want to save money and time then do it the right way the first time. The length is not the issue. It is the angle of the joints. Leaving the tcase drop kit in is your best bet besides a Motor Mount Lift which, in most cases, won't get rid of your vibe. A SYE and double cardan drive shaft is the best, do it once do it right, option.

I don't have any vibes right now. I was just trying to increase my clearence. I was looking at the shafts from Tom Woods. If I can talk my wife into letting me sink $500 more into the jeep, how hard is it to install a SYE?

It really depends on your level of craftsmanship. To me, a SYE isn't all that difficult and I can finish one out in a couple hours. It will take more time if it is your first time. There are tons of write ups to guide you through the process. You also need some specific tools that you will probably have to buy. I bought a decent set of snap-on snap ring pliers. They are a must.

A longer driveshaft installed on the OE transfer case output shaft's slip joint will only be longer... the u-joint angles will be identical so there would be no benefit to the longer driveshaft if installed by itself.

The only way to achieve a lower driveshaft angle (and consequently a reduced u-joint angle) is to either cut the OE t-case output shaft off together and install a "hack 'n' tap" kit from Rubicon Express, or install a full-blown SYE kit. Either of those would move the front driveshaft mounting point forward which is what lowers the driveshaft and u-joint angles.

I'll have access to plenty of tools. I put my lift on and I do all of my maintenance at the Ft Meade auto hobby shop. It's a pretty nice setup. They have all of the tools and lifts I'll need. I was just trying to avoid doing the SYE for money reasons and time. So I guess just getting a longer drive shaft and taking out the transfer drop kit won't work?
