Thinking about going frameless...

I'm in the market for a new top. And I'm thinking of going with either a bestop trektop or a softopper. But Neither of them come with upper door skins... Does anybody have one of these with half doors? What brand uppers do you have ? And if you have the softopper brand. Do your upper doors match the color? Looking for black in color.. Thank you in advance!

I have bestop NX, with Bestop replacement doors. I am very satisfied with the top its very quiet and doesn't leak. Also like that it is easy to switch configurations and use with jammer and duster. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Also like the sunrider feature for those early spring late fall rides where it is about 50° and sunny...just flip sunrider back and it "feels like you are almost topless, but you don't freeze your a$$ off....feel free to PM me or ask any more questions on here.

Yeah I finally broke down and look at quadratec lol. And I actually found the bestop trektop nx with the 2 piece soft doors... Think I might go with that one! Being as I'm in Florida and the doors are really only protection from the rain... Not the cold. Thanks for the replies!

What condition is your top in? I've considered going to a frame top.

I've got a Bestop frameless top with half doors, my only complaint is that its a b*tch to get the back window on. Its quiet compared to other soft tops, and ive never had a problem with leaking. Also, my upper door skins whistle if im doing over 50 (but this is rare because ive got a 4cyl with 31' tires). Only thing i wish i would have done different is spent the extra money for door skins with slider windows in the instead of zip windows, but only because i cant scrape frost on the zipper windows. I suppose that probably isnt a problem in Florida tho!

FWIW I found that most ST have to be "put up/ on" in a certain order.

For me the on "stock" ST on my TJ, the latches needed to be hooked but not latched or you could not get the sail panels in.

Using the same theory I tried that on my Frameless...and was disappointed...I did find that if I open the top like for a "sun-rider" and put all 3 back windows on and didn't tighten straps fully on rear, that when I closed the top and latched it, the top was nice and tight. this also made it a LOT EASIER to zip the zippers on either side of the back window.

When I run with sunrider open and back windows out I have to tighten up the back straps or they "fly in the wind"...PM me if this only causes more confusion...some times things only make sense in my mind....

Do frameless soft tops replace the door surrounds? Or do they work with them? I've been thinking of going framless when I get my new roll cage.
I've seen that some of the frameless tops look saggy on the stock sport cage so I'm getting a roll cage with center bars and a cross bar in the back.

Some do some don't...My Bestop NX came with everything to install..except doors...but I understand that can be a "added" to the NX package.

And along the lines of the "saggy" part...I have no padding on my rollbars, and can get it very tight not saggy at all...again the NX top

Saw the "going frameless" title.
Thankfully you are not buying a Cherokee.

FWIW, I researched frameless tops quite awhile ago. All that were being sold at that time needed a header bar with the lip attachment, and I believe one model had its own goofy door surrounds. I ended up going with a factory top.

Now, the Bestop NX series has an attached header with buckles just like the factory top. Something I may of went with if it was offered back then.

Also something to think about is frameless tops may not work with an aftermarket cage, or cage upgrade, if that is in your future plans.

Hmm, good to know. I didnt even consider that the top might not fit with a custom cage...

As long as you have the part or replace the "rollbar" above the front seats....and close to the same angle in the rear by the back seats you will be good....just don't go any "higher" or "outside" of the factory "cage" (cage is being used strictly for descriptive purposes in this instance)

I have the Softopper on mine..... never again.
Sags and flaps in the wind.
Leaks in multiple places.

I will go with the Bestop NX next time.

I've had my Bestop Trektop NX for several months now. I've been very impressed with it. No leaks, quieter than my factory soft top, and no flapping. It fits very tight and can be a little time consuming the first few times to put on. Works much better if you put it on in 70 degrees or more. All that being said I have no regrets.

Make sure you get the Trektop NX not just the Trektop. I ordered the wrong one the first time and would not have liked it. The side rear windows can't be removed. I returned it and got the NX and couldn't be happier.
