Third brake light

Anyone have any trouble with there third brake light? I have a 99 wrangler and the bulb looks good and the fuse looks good but no light.

Not sure about the 99 but my 03 has contacts behind a cover inside on the tailgate. Use a meter or test light to check.

Use a wire brush or sand paper to clean all four of the 3rd brake light's button contacts located near the tail gate hinge that you'll find when the tail gate is wide open. The black plastic housing on the tail gate has two of them, the other two are on the tub. They get a coating on them that will stop the 3rd brake light from working, cleaning it off will restore operation. At least that is the usual or most common cause of the 3rd brakelight not working when the bulb and fuse are good.

Thanks for expanding on my post Jerry. I started with the premise that he'd want to know if he was even getting any power there first, then go from there.

When I got my '97 the third brake light didn't work because the button/tabs on the door were removed, as they had been broken off in the past. I hard-wired them and haven't had a problem since. Doesn't look quite as cool but I know the circuit is good.

Take care... RT

Randomthoughts, howd you wire yours up? did you splice in from the other brake lights??

Howdy Apex

The original wires were still in the covering of the tailgate. I cut off the connector ends, figured out which one would be the top, spun wire on the studs on the body and wired them up, making sure there wasn't too much slack for them to get caught on other things.

I just figured something fell on them, but I don't know. What humans can make, they can break.

Merry Christmas... RT

I just pulled off my 3rd brake light, including the tabs on the door (left the ones on the tub). Anyone want them for free (maybe a few bucks to ship)?

LOL...it's off-topic, but one of the annoyances I vanquished the day I bought was to rip that stupid, plastic third brake light off the jeep. I had to stomp on that friggin thing to flatten it out enough to stuff in the garbage can too.

Then the clutch starter actuator switch got ripped out as well. Not a bad day at the office...
