Now that you've reminded me.

2004 Sahara.
Cigarette lighter has not worked since I bought it in May. Replaced fuse. Fried same. Repaced again. Tried phone charger. Works fine. Could not find lighter element for 2004, so bought one for earlier year Wrangler. Same story.
VIN check does not show "smoker's pkg". Nor does it have an ashtray. Socket on right has cap marked pwr outlet.
Now my question: Do non smoker pkg Saharas come with a cigarette lighter socket and a pwr outlet or 2 pwr outlets that can't handle the load of a lighter? Quite possible that PO cut the cap off the one on the left.
Lord knows what the dealer will want for complete new lighter assy.
BTW: remember this is the Tech section, so keep any snide anti smoking comments to the Off Topic section.
Thanks.

Didn't see it mentioned elsewhere, so to just to clear things up in case anyone got mislead: the cigarette lighter plug doesn't have three prongs (well it does, but not electrically) which is why there are only two wires for it. The two on the barrel of the plug are for the same thing. Think about it, they're both touching the same metal contact when you insert the plug into the socket.

The ground for the lighter is also tied into the brake light switch ground on the 00 TJ's... If your brake lights work fine, then chances are the ground for the lighter is fine also... The wiring diagram locates the ground at the Left Kick Panel and is a black wire connection (G200). Hope this helps to narrow it down a bit

quick and easy test take the lighter and hook it to the battery with a couple pigtails if it works there it is in the other wiring, if not you have a bad socket

Well it wasn't bad ground. We tried cutting the old lighter off and splicing in a new one, and that didn't work either. Pretty much, I got so frustrated with trying to fix what was wrong with it, that I just ended up hotwiring the old lighter to the battery, and it worked. I still have no idea what was wrong with the wiring or whatever on the old lighter. But anyways, as long as I don't leave anything plugged into the hotwired lighter now, I shouldnt have to worry about my battery being dead one day?

I would think you would be fine as long as you don't leave things plugged in; many cars have plugs that continue to work even without the car being turned on.

Er.. Yeah it should not run your battery down. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to wire it through the ignition

Did you ever check the relay that will turn power to it on and off.
