I think Iv'e realized that it would be cheaper and make more sense for me to look into buying a used TJ, rather then trading in my Ranger on new JK. I cant part with my pickup, that being said I see allot of TJ's with the 2.4 liter for sale. I was wondering If I could get some unbiased info on Wrangers equiped with this lil engine? Anything and everything 2.4 liter realated will be appreciated!..... I should mention I dont plan on wheeling,and the TJ will not be my daily driver....
hey Chuck. do you plan on getting one with a lift or oversized tires? i have a 4 cylinder that i bought last Sept and it's my 1st Wrangler ever. i was holding out for a I6 but found this 4 that was the perfect color scheme, had most of the mods i wanted, and was a good price. i wish i'd held out for an
I6. i have 33" tires and a 3 inch body lift. the tires make accelerating difficult and my top highway speed is about 65 MPH. i'm about to lower the gearing to 4.88 for about $1,200 to regain some power. for the money, i could have bought an I6 but i've got too much invested in this one now to start over.
if you're going to keep everything stock, the 4 cylinder would be a cheaper way to get a fun Jeep to ride around town with the top down. you said it won't be for wheeling or your daily driver so i guess you just want a weekend toy? that's what mine is but i got the bigger tires anyway. the I6 is the "bulletproof" engine but the 4 is reliable too. if you just want something stock to have a good time in on paved roads, the 4 cylinder is a good, inexpensive way to go.
Not the 2.4, I have 97's with 2.5/5speeds, I like them, I've also got 4.0's in my XJ and ZJ. The 4 cylinders are easy to work on, have more than enough power around town and are OK on the highway. Off road they are just as good as as my 4.0's. Keep the tires to a max of 31's and you will be fine with it, won't be a speed demon but it will get 19mpg, both mine get 20 with 30" BFG AT/KO's. As far as I know all 4 cylinders come with 4:10's stock, I may look into regearing one of them when I put a locker in, not sure yet, depends on finances for toys part of the budget... Once you go over 31's 5th gear becomes pretty much useless except on flat interstates and over 70.
yeah im pretty much looking for a weekend ride. no lift, close to stock is just fine. Doing a little research it looks like TJ's from 97-02 came with the 2.5 amc 4 banger. Perhaps I should be asking about that engine too, there's plenty of them for sale...
4 bangers are very capable off road, on the freeway your best to stay on the slow lane. I've got one and I'm totally happy with it, and that's comparing it with my two previous jeeps (cj 8 cyl, and a yj with a 4.2) My four banger smokes my old YJ, BTW.
If you ever want to go with big tires or lockers, your main issue will be the Dana 35 rear axle, as these are prone to snapping with big meats. A Super 35 kit or a Dana 44 will remedy this though.
I have a 4cyl. It sucks as a wheeler and dd because of the amount of tire I have under it. If you are using a 4cyl as a on road only and go no bigger that 31's then it would be a fine little rig for you.
I have had Jeeps with everything from a 360, 327 chevy, 6cyl with a 5spd and auto to a 4cyl and a 5spd.
The 4cyl is a slow little rig but they do good on gas.
I've got the 2.5 and i have no problems with it. I drive about 15 miles to school (highway) and it does just fine. I have 33's on it right now and does good on and off road. It does lack some power, but just stay in the slow lane and upgrade to the I6 throttle body. Gets decent gas mileage. I don't use 5th gear often
Ive got a 87 2.5 5 speed with 187k miles on it. Gets 16 MPG and its all stop and go accross town. I did the 4.0 throttle body swap and have to say it was the "Best Bang for the Buck" upgrade Ive done on any vehicle Ive ever owned.
