Thoughts on this Jeep?

This is the Jeep I'm looking to buy. I think I can talk the lady down to $11,000 on it. But just checking to see what you think first.

Oh and it has a clean car fax too. Shows 3 or 4 owners...

2003 Jeep Wrangler X commando 4wd 33i... tires softtop

Thanks,

This looks like a good Jeep and the price is not out of reason either, especially if you can get her down some more.

Means she drives it without underwear. Check the seat for stains.

The Jeep looks to be in good condition, but check to see if it's got the D35 or D44 axles, and if it has the D35, what gears it has inside. Check the underside for signs of rust or rot, and make sure that you look objectively, and not like you know you want it no matter what.

First thing I think of with that is (because I have a 6 year-old) Spongebob. In the show, the "bad guy" Plankton has a computer wife named Karen.

Commando is linked somehow to the X. I have an X and I have seen that before. I think it indicates Commando on my insurance card.

I guess I can't name my Jeep Karen, that's my bellybutton's name. That would be confusing to each of them if I was talking to one or the other.....

My Jeep is an "X" model. I wonder what makes an "X" a Commando? Specialized combat training? I guess mine would have to be a Commando, then.......

Going topless AND commando? My kind of girl...

Looks like a good buy. Doesn't look like it's been abused yet and if it's already got a lift and 33s it saves you some trouble and gives you plenty of room to build. Like G-Pur said, definitely check for rust in the frame. Give it a good test drive to make sure the lift was installed properly and it doesn't have any wobble issues, especially at higher speeds.

Correct me if I'm wrong but arent the D44 axles only found in the Rubicon's unless aftermarket? And if it's a D35 it will most likely have factory gears unless they have been changed right?

Nope. any Jeep with the 30'' wheel package has a D44 rear. (its an option for 6cyl models)

my 01 has a D44...there was no Rubi in 01.

D44 fronts are a Rubi only thing on the TJ

dingdingding.... winner. D44 was an option on the sports and saharas. I think it may have been for the X's as well.

This Jeep is in Des Moines, IA and i'm heading out to look at it next Wednesday. Is there anyone in the area that could take a peak at it also since I'm fairly new to Jeeps?

My bad. Still, ask the owner if it's been regeared to run with 33's.

Even with the gears being stock it should be fine. The axle is a D35 which will do fine with the 33's although those tires do not look like they are 33's. I have a 3" lift and 33's and the gap is not that big. Now if it is a 4" lift then that is a different story. Take it for a test drive and make sure it doesn't have the death wobble. That can be a big issue. I hope this helps!

If I were to go with this Jeep would I have any problems going off roading or anything like that with the D35? Or should I look for something with the D44's?

im just as new as you so take this advice for what it is. i would say it depends on your level of dificulty of where your off roading. i personally am paranoid of stuff breaking so i wouldnt. but if you mean just driving down a hilly dirt road through the woods without obstacles, yea your fine.

D35's are weaker than D44's, and if you run something close to a 35" tire you run the risk of snapping axles.

And for the clean carfax, that doesn't mean a thing, other than no incidents were reported.

um you can bust a dana 35 with 31's or bone stock with 235's... However in most cases it will live with 33's as long as there is not locker. Myself I would look for one with a dana 44(metal fill plug on diff cover). Or plan to upgrade the shafts on the dana 35 if you plan to do a lot of trails.

A lift has no affect on the strength of the axle.

You will be fine with a D35. You can break anything in a Jeep, even if it was a D44. But do not go any bigger than 33's on that axle. If you will keep it at a 33 then it will be just fine offroading. I do not baby mine at all when I offroad and nothing on or in the axle has broken. Of course if you find one with a D44 then get it. It will save you money down the road if you plan on getting bigger tires

I wheel mine with 33's on a D35, and it's fine, but its slow as hell going up hill on a highway. That's really the only reason why I want to regear.
