Thumping noise from front drive train

2003 X just started happening recently, when the steering wheel is turned to
the end stop on either left or right turns the front drive train seems to be pulsing the steering wheel and making a thumping feel and sound. jacked the front end up and checked the ball joints and tie rod ends for play, they`re tight, If I put it into 4WD it more sensitive to the problem, wondering if the U joints for the half shafts are bad or even worse the
differential is at fault , how can i isolate the problem best? jeep has 86K miles on it, diff oil level is right..Help !!

Most likely you have at least one bad U-joint in the front axles. A turn to the stops, put the joint in it's most severe twist.

If it's starting to bind, you will feel it as the axle turns, relaying the bind into the wheels/steering.

God I miss that Jeep. Forgot the kinda Jeep, 80 SX4.
