tick tick tick in the engine when it first starts

Last few mornings, I've noticed a very noticeable tick-tick-tick in the engine when I first start it up. It only does it perhaps several times, a second or three at most, and then stops. Any suggestions what it is and if it will become a problem later? Anything I should be checking for?

I just changed the oil about three weeks ago, I don't think it's related. The oil level is fine, using Havoline 10W30 on a IL6.

That kind of startup ticking is sometimes caused by a leaky check valve inside the oil filter. That check valve is there to prevent the oil from draining down out of the top-end of the engine which can cause ticking at startup if it leaks. Switching to a different oil filter like an AC-Delco Duraguard, Purolator PureOne, Wix, K&N, Mobil-1, etc. might help. What oil filter did you install?

Sounds like it could be a hydraulic valve lifter that has leaked down after sittting with the engine off for some time. After the engine starts and you have oil pressure, they pump up and no more itck, tick. Not a real problem unless it keeps on ticking

I generally use a FRAM PH16, think that's the part number.

I've used Purolators in the past but had a BIG issue with them once so they lost my business. even had a mobil-1 installed before.

Fram is a filter that has had that issue in the past. I've personally had good luck with Purolator PureOne filters over the years, what happened with yours?

I've been invited to a small (10 invitees) meeting/tour of Fram in Toledo in two weeks so I'm definitely going to be pushing for answers on that and other questions regarding their oil filters.

Jerry, After checking, I gotta eat some crow on that one. It wasn't the Purolators I had problems with, it was the K&Ns that I had problems with.

When I first purchased the Jeep, the OO used K&Ns, so I continued to do so for years.

One evening, I purchase the oil and filter to do the job next morning.
Drain the oil, removed the old filter, installed the drain plug, put oil on the ring of the new oil filter, and go to install.....only it won't install.

After a few minutes of trying to figure out why, I discovered it was the wrong filter, but in the correct box.

lesson learned, my bad, I should have checked before I left the store.
turned out it was a problem a few others were having, and the store was pulling the stock, we just happen to be the ones to find the problem.

Another time, same thing, this time, I'm checking the box and the PN before leaving the store.

same thing, drain oil, remove filter, install plug, oil on ring,......wont screw on.

turns out, they were mislabeled, messed up the threads, or threaded it wrong. not my mistake, theirs, confirmed at the store.

third time, didn't make it out of the store. I was inspecting the hell out of the filter and just barely, very faintly, heard something in it. After turning upside down and shaking, metal flakes fell out. Probably from the tap/thread process.

that did it for me, I could not pay that much for a filter anymore with the experiences I had had.

This could happen to anyone during production, but after three problems within a year......

not trying to hijack the thread but i never knew that lol! mine ticks just a little at startup and when i turn it off i can hear something dripping, getting under the jeep after turning it off i can hear it is in the oil pan, think it could be that check valve, i think mine has a fram filter on it atm

a "ticking" sound could also be a small crack developing in your exhaust manifold (or exhaust header gasket if equipped). I had this same noise on both my 97 Tj and my 87 alfa romeo, both with exhaust headers. A little high temp gasket sealant around the edges fixed the problem on both
