Time to Regear:

I'm currently running 33 inch tires with my stock 3.73 gearing and auto trans. This combination seems to be working fine, but I'm planning on going to 35 inch tires in the near future, so I'm looking into regearing my differentials (D30 front, D44 rear). Since I know very little on this topic, I'm hoping I can get some good advice.

A guy down the street from me has a new full set of Superior gears that he says I can have for $250. The front is 4.56 and the back is 4.55. He said that he bought them and then decided to go with 4.88's.

Is the difference in the front and rear ratios normal?

I will not go bigger than 35's, that being said, are 4.56's the best way to go?

For 35" tires and a manual transmission, speaking from personal experience, 4.88 is a very optimal all-around ratio. It's what I am running and I am VERY (totally!) happy with it. I am happy not to be running 4.56... which "works" ok for 35" tires but you'll find yourself downshifting a lot more for even gentle grades, plus you'll be traveling faster on offroading trails than you need to.

Jerry, wouldn't going from 3:73/33's to 4:56/35's be a reduction? I'm not saying you shouldn't get 4:88's.

Yep 4.56 with 35" would give a less painful driving experience than 33" with 3.73 would but at least in my opinion, would not be a good ratio to install when deciding between 4.88 and 4.56.

Ok, so since I have a three speed auto and I'm not going bigger than 35"s, should I go with the 4.56's?

i'd go 4.88 if 35's are in the future...but 4.56's wouldn't be bad if you get a good deal...there isn't a huge difference so you may as well go lower.

i have 35s with 4.56 gears and a 4spd auto tranny. it works perfect for me.

i was about to say...older jeeps have the 3 speed.

if you have a 4speed and plan on 35's sometime soon then 4.88's would be great.

By doing that (4:88/37's) haven't you only accomplished a slight difference from 4:56/35's. He said 35's was as large as he wanted to go. I am thinking of the same set up as Unlimeted's on mine and am curious.

i would suggest unlimited just get teh 4.56 for the GREAT price it will be a great gearing even if its not the best, i have a manual and 3.73's ands 35's and i think its fine, so wiht and auto adn 4.56's youll be doing great
as for 4point, if you're going to be paying the same price for 4.88's vs 4.56's(whish u will be) you might as well just go to 4.88's
but it is not worth the extra $250 ish for unlimited

one more thing:

if you reagear, think about intalling some lockers at the same time. it īs only a bit more work and itīs worth the money.
i installed ARB lockers with m 4.56 gears.

I heard used gears can be noisy.

The bigger cost will be the labor for having the gears changed out. I'd rather pay the extra money for the 4.88's if that is the best approach. This Jeep is my daily driver so I want to make sure I do the right thing the first time.

Debruins, your saying you have 3.73's with 35's and its fine? I have been wondering if it would work. I had a 1979 F-250 with 60's and 3.54 gears with 35's and it did great. Got really good mpg with them on. I dont care if it's slow because I am not looking to drag race.

Just as a comparison I have 33" tire and 3:73 gears. So with this tire size versus these stock tire size it is roughly equivalent to having 3:54 gears.

Your 4-speed auto has a very deep overdrive gear ratio so with that transmission, I would go 4.88 for 35" tires. A local wheeler I know runs that combination, plus I have driven it, and it's a VERY sweet combination.

If you gear too high with your 4-speed auto, like with 4.56, you'll always be pushing on the overdrive button to get it downshifted slightly for more response both around town and on the highway.

After driving his 4-speed with 35" tires and 4.88, I wish I had that exact setup... it's a great combination.

i live in an area with now mountains. for me the 4.56 gears are perfect with my 35" tires and 4-spd auto tranny.
in an area with mountains i would have installed 4.88 gears.

most of the time i drive with 100 kph (62 mph) on the german "autobahn" and then in 4th gear with O/D i have exactly 2000 rpm. thatīs enough to accellerate without shifting down and low enough for a good mpg.
when i was on holiday in the alps where i had to climb hills the 4.88 would have been still to low.

I actually bought a set of 4.88's two weeks ago. The guy I got them from said to hold off on installing then until I get the 35's, so they will be sitting in the garage for a few months until I can come up with the money for them.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'll let you know how it all turns out when I finally get it put together.
