time to upgrade... basic lift questions

I have a 97 tj.. stock.. i have 31's on it now with the gambler wheels i think.. they rub at full lock... i can deal with that for now.. went off roading over the weekend... and ya.. i need some kinda lift...lol.... so since this is my every day driver.. what can i do to make it easy/cheap/nice looking/ decent off road..

I was thinking of like a two inch BB and a 1" BL.. would give me 3 total and in time when i find some i can get some 33" tires.. and untill then the 31's would look ok..

with that lift would i have any drive line issues? or would i just be able to lower the trans mount? could I go 3" Suspension 1" body? or just 3" suspension and still be ok with mostly stock parts for the time being? any thoughts are appreciated.. here is a pic from the weekend



and to me. i think the front springs are sagging.. is there a way to measure and see what they should be ? to see if i need new springs or not? thanks

I installed a RockKrawler 4" lift and now have huge clearance, only problem is you have to get wheels with the correct backspacing for your application. How cheap is cheap? I am still running the stock wheels with 31" 10.50's and have no turning radius problems or rub, however when I go up to 33's I will have to buy wheels with a 3.5" backspacing or the tires will rub on my springs. Most lifts come with new springs cause the stock springs aren't tall enough. Then there comes the question about shocks, stock shocks are chinsey and you will have to upgrade or else your ride will suck.

ya i am not planning on keeping these wheels when i upgrade tire size.. just for now.. 4" is a bit much i would think.. I was thinking just a budget lift with new shocks.. like a 3" BB and shocks are like 240.00 thats about cheap for me.... just wondering about drive line angels and such

you will prolly have to buy a transfer case lowering kit, it costs $20.00, the angle of the rear/front diff after a lift causes you to have driveline vibration, that is the cheapest way to get rid of the vibe, i installed one on mine and I have hardly any vibe anymore, the virst day I drove it after the lift install, the damn thing was like a giant vibrator, now its nearly gone. The next step would be a cv driveshaft conversion or an sye but they are not cheap

I just installed a Rustys 2in coil lift w/shocks. Reg price is 310$, they had a special and I got it for 285$. Im running 32's, so far I like it. Have not had it off road yet.

I ended up getting a 2 inch BB on my jeep that I run with 31's. I had no driveline issues at all. The wheels still rub occasionaly, due to the stock gambler rims. If your springs are sagging, it might be easier to get 2 inch taller springs; however, many people are getting rid of there stock springs for dirt cheap. The guy I bought my 2 inch BB off of gave me his springs for free. I didn't even bother lowering the trans case.

I would not recommend a 3" BB. That is just too much. i'd get a 3" suspension lift and another in BL and add 33s. Drop the tcase a bit and you should be fine for the driveline angles. As for tires. It really depends on your threads. I have 3.5" BS rims and 35x12.5 and no rubbing at all. 3.75-4 should be good for 33s

thanks for all the help.. is there a way to measure the stock springs and see if they are sagging or not.. i thought i read they should be like 12" from top to bottom... something like that.. anyway.. I think my plan of 2" suspension and 1" body will do be good when i upgrade to 33's sometime in the future.. will be just 31's for a while.. maybe wheel spacers or something to get rid of the rubbing.. I will start with the 2" and save for the 1" body later.... should give a nice stance and not mess up any angles..

lol dont feel bad, i rolled on 6" of lift and the stock 30s for like 3 months untill i can afford my new 35s

You can get steelies with 3.5 to 4 in BS as cheap or cheaper than spacers. Then you don't have worries that spacers can add.

I have gamblers currently and will be replacing this month with Cragar V5 black steelies (3.75 or 4 in BS).

ya i might do that.. i really like the plain black wheels...they look nice..

there is a very small chance you might. If you're unlucky like tiny, you might need few washers in there. Dont worry though it's very very easy and the cost is few bucks.

looks pretty simple enough.. i will lower it to be safe..

just for thoughts.. i found a good deal on a local 4" spring lift for the tj.. $150.00..all four springs.. there is a lot more i would need to do if i went with a 4" lift right...???

There is no reason to lower the tcase if you dont have any vibrations.

yes there are more things than just 4" springs. As for how much more, it really depends what you want to do with the rig, do you want to be 4" taller and ride on the street with few easy trails or do you want to crawl razor sharp mountains...

ya going to stick with 2 or 2.5" lift and a body lift.. alot better for my needs


do you know how tall the front springs on a TJ are supposed to be? trying to see if mine are sagging or not... might just try to find someone who is getting rid of stock springs off a newer tj and toss those in as i do the lift... your jeep is sweet by the way!!!

Hmm, where in Michigan? Right now Im up in Mount Pleasant going to Central but I live in Pinckney (Brighton area) all summer. We should go wheelin sometime. Im actually gonna be starting a club pretty soon with a few people I think. Dont know if you'd be interested in that. But I could deff. help you throw a lift on your Jeep, I've got plenty of experience with just about anything that can go wrong with TJ's, YJ's and ZJ's (yes I used to wheel a grand cherokee).

Oh yea, and as far as lifts go Id say your on the right track with a 2" suspension and 1" bl. Keep a good stance and clear 33's. You should deff. check out our local suspension company, BDS, they are out of Michigan and they make very nice stuff. I ran a lift of theirs on my old ZJ and it rode really well. They do make a 2" lift that comes with coils and shocks for $400 I think it is. More than you were looking to spend but I would not suggest a simple bb. Sure its cheap and it gets the job done but you will notice a difference if you decide to get the coils instead. And for a bl I would recommend the JKS 1.25" bl. Again, a company that makes high quality stuff and has been proven. That will clear your 33's well. Any more queations just let us know but again, if you need help gettin a lift on your rig I will help ya out.

By the way, where is that picture from that your wheelin at? Its so hard to find good places to go in Michigan!

ya going to keep an eye out for lifts and do it this winter sometime.. would be nice to find like a 2.5 or something.. but i think i will be happy with 2" and the 31's for a while untill i can afford 33's and some nicer wheels..

the more i look at mine pretty sure the front is saggin so i am looking for some stock springs wheni do the lift.. thanks

1. Your tires rub at full lock because of the wheels' backspacing, NOTHING to do with the lift. Adjusting the steering stops is one option. Replacing the wheels is another. Wheel spacers are a third option. If you get new wheels, get BS of 4" or 3.75 and you should be good up to 12.5" wide tires.

2. Driveline issues may or may not be an issue with a 2" BB. The 1" BL won't play into that. If you do have vibes, you could likely just put washers between your t-case skid and the frame for the lowering you need. Why go up 2" in susp just to drop 1" for a t-case mod? Kills your breakover angle. With a 2" lift, the amount you'd need to adjust your t-case is minimal.

3. With any lift, you will shift your axles over a bit (due to the track bar length). The higher the lift, the more the shift. Stock trackbars are okay for a while, but you may get tired of the shifted look. So if you can afford the adj track bars, they're VERY much worth it. Beefier components are always good IMO.

I'd try to keep your lift under 4" suspension. After that, it gets more $$$. If you want something a bit nicer than a BB, consider the RE 3" lift, the OME lift, or perhaps the newer RC lift. I've heard good things about all of them on the board. I have a 97 SE and went with the OME/JKS setup. Your 97 springs are likely sagged, as were mine. With the OME, I netted 3.25" over what I had previously, so I KNOW they were sagging big time. Normally, it is about 2.5" of lift from OME. And I have a bit of armor and aftermarket stuff on mine.

thanks.. ya i know the tires rub because of back spacing... thats why i said the gambler wheels.. cause i know they have crazy back spacing.. looking for some cheap steel wheels now with 3.75 or 4" BS.. thanks for the advise..
