Tire carrier bumper

Anyone want to recommend a good tire carrier bumper that is heavy duty. Just got rear ended by a drunk driver today and it fucked up my stock tire carrier and my hatch.

I have a "body armor" that I would recommend. Very heavy duty and good powder coating.

Garvin Industries 71000 - Garvin Industries Rear ATS Series Swing Away Bumper System for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ, TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec

This one is rated for up to a 38" tire I haven't been able to find one that is stronger than that, almost all the other ones on quadratec say 35-36" tire or something like that.

I've had my xrc on for a couple months. Been thru some heavy mud and offroad and hasn't budged. I like it. Definitly heavy duty.

If you do some research on smittybilt tire carriers you will find many bad reviews on them. Their quality is the same on that as the rest of their product line, very low. I would say Jeerperman, rock hard or many of the other American made heavy duty bumpers. Stay away from the chinese stuff (smittybilt) if at all possible.

See you can't say they are all bad! I think it all hinges on which Chinese 8 year old is on the weld line that day, some seem to be better than others!

I know of no bumper-mounted tire carriers I would recommend. I'll give a big X2 on the above recommended OR-Fab spare tire carrier which doesn't care what type of bumper you have. I've had two TJs with that carrier and it's the best/most solid I've seen in 15 years.

I wouldn't even CONSIDER that Chinese-junk that Smittybilt sells now. Too bad, Smittybilt used to have a great reputation but that was before they started having their stuff made for them in China.

I got the Highrock(Bestop) tire carrier and have had my 33" on it for almost 2 years now and I love it. Especially how it swings with the tailgate.

Smittybilt isn't all bad. I got the front XRC and rear bumper. Rocker guards and tube fenders. The tube fenders rust up real fast though. I had them replaced at the one year mark under warranty. The rust up at the seams fast. I also had rust pop up right under the powercoating, meaning poor quality finish. Though all my other Smitty parts ar only rusting where I hit them with a big rock(or truck trying to parallel park on a icy hill)

X2 on the Bestop Tire Carrier. I put one on my TJ a month ago and am very happy with it. As others stated, the OR-Fab is probably top of the line, but was more $$ than I wanted to spend, and I really wanted one that worked with my tailgate. My TJ is my daily driver and I use the tailgate quite a lot. Both are independent of the rear bumper.

I mainly like the versatility of the or fab. CB antenna hi lift mount Jerry can holder. Though, I'm quite sure with some minor fab work. I can make all of those to attach onto it right.

The price on their website is MSRP which is much higher than what you can get it through a dealer for. Contact my friend Gerald Lee with Savvy Offroad at gman@savvyoffroad (a dealer for ORF) for a better price and it wouldn't surprise me if it was under $500 IIRC from Gerald.
