Tire Carrier? How big of a tire can it hold?

I am finally getting a spare tire that matches my 31" GY duratrack's, Will the stock tire carrier hold this big of a tire? will it be to big or heavy?

You will notice a definite difference in the weight on your gate, but it should fit just fine.

I currently have a 31" spare hanging on my tailgate and I have started to notice some distortion in my tailgate. It is reasonable to think that this is the biggest tire ever hung from considering the jeep is bone stock otherwise. I found the leak the hard way during the winter when it was raining. The carpet in the outback area got wet. Where it was wet left only the possibility of the tailgate not sealing properly against the liftgate. The seal is still good, so bowed tailgate.

i put 31-10.5's on on my 06 and noticed the rubber bumper things that keep the tire from hitting the body interfered with the wider tire. i bought a tire adapter bracket and it worked well but it moved the tire out from the body and up so it bounced and blocked the third brake light. after a year or so i noticed that it was stressing the stock bracket and warping it i dont think it was from the extra weight i think it was from the extra leverage on the stock bracket. anyways long story, not so short, i got sick of the bouncing and bolts coming loose that i cut the rubber pucks in half and took off the extra bracket and the tire fits perfect. no more bounce/rattle and warped tail gate.

When I went from 30's to 31's on my '03 Sahara, I did a lot of research on this subject and discovered that very few people have any problems with 31's on the stock tire carrier. I think the secret though is to make sure the tire is snug against all of the rubber bumpers. My '03 has two bumpers on the gate and one on the tub and, using various stack-ups of washers (between the carrier and the wheel) on the three carrier studs, you can end up with the wheel being snug against the carrier and the tire being snug against the bumpers. If you make sure these things are taken care of, you shouldn't have any trouble with 31's.

Anything bigger than a 31 inch will start to hang crooked (top hanging back/bottom hanging close to the bumper)
