Tire Height

I just picked up a used set of Big Foot 31x10.5's with most of the tread left and they didn't seem much taller than my 235/75's. I mean they look great but measured only 28.5", is that typical? Seems like a long way from 31, which is what I was hoping for.

most tires measure a little lower than advertised height. depending on brand, it could be spot on, or 2" smaller.

i say it's normal. there is just alot of deviation between different tire names, BFG, mickey thompson, goodyear, etc.

verify on the sidewall that they really are "31's"

Went from 235/75 to BFG 31 and they didn't look much different but I measured the height of the jeep before swapping and it raised it 1.25 inches.

What are some brands to look out for that will advertise 31" but really measure less? What are good brands?

It's kind of like socks and underware, the size is just a number to help you decide if it'll fit, it really doesn't have anything to do with the actual size they are...

And dammit, now when hubby gets home with the Charger, I'm gonna have to measure the metric tires on it and see if they are close to what they are marked.... Thanks!

My new set of Starfire 30X10.50's are something like 30.6" or close to it. If you find a good tire website it'll tell you the actual height. I think TireMonkey.com does.. you don't have to buy from a site, but you can use it as a reference.

After thinking about it, I measured the new spare and it was about 30.5 unweighted. And the others are closer to like 29+, maybe it was just too late last night! InfernoGirl, you crack me up, underwear? All I have to say is, I guess us guys just have an issue with size!

i think Super Swampers are the only tire that measures true. same with TrXus, but Swamper owns them. with this company (Interco) a 33" tire, is a 33" tire.

i'm not sure who the worst is, but it's well known BFG's run very small.

I ordered my spare from 4wheelparts.com and they were very upfront with it. when I was looking at the 33's it said right on that page that it will only measure about 32.5.. And thanks GroundHawg, I'll keep that in mind when I'm ordering my next set!

Just be careful not to get OCD about it or try to think too hard with it. By this I mean don't think "I'm getting 33's with no lift because my 33's are actually only 32's" because when lift height is reccomended, that's already taken into account. "you need 2.5 inches to run the tire we CALL a 33." this is one of the reasons you see 2 different jeeps, same lift, same tire size. One rubs slightly, one doesn't. It's because jeep #1 has TrXus 33's that are actually 33" and jeep #2 has KM2's that are more like 32". Bumpers and winches play a role too, but tire size is a culprit.

It's really no big deal. A 1/2 inch or even 1 inch isn't going to make a difference between you climbing and clearing an obsticle or not. A 1 inch difference only lifts the jeep 1/2 inch. No big deal.

Tire makers must hire insecure guys to do the measuring.

I was under the impression that women couldn't measure anything because they had always been told that 6" was 8"!

I have 31's but my spare is a different brand from the PO and I hate having different brand spare from the normal running tires!

I'm so ADD that would drive me crazy Literally and figuratively!! I was going to take the spare tire cover off, but I noticed the different brand and about flipped ... I was going to take the spare off all together, but I just don't have the funds to do it right with the mount going and cleaning up the tailgate... OK, sorry to hijack the thread... back to normal business
